THE MAFIA BOSS'S RIGGED CASINO / Chapter 14 / 16

Chapter 13 - Cleaning House along the Marina

The following three weeks were a whirlwind of joyous celebration and new beginnings.

Under my direction, the Vance Foundation established an independent legal defense clinic in Atlantic City—providing free tenant defense, medical advocacy, and emergency financial relief for working-class families facing corporate negligence.

The domestic and service staff at the casino and harbor terminals were given permanent employment contracts with full pension benefits, union wages, and comprehensive healthcare coverage under the newly chartered Santoro Maritime Accord.

Mrs. Gable was promoted to Chief of Estate Administration, overseeing a fully staffed, respectful household where no worker was ever treated as an invisible servant.

One Saturday morning in July, I walked into the grand dining room of the penthouse.

The room had been completely remodeled, its dark, foreboding tapestries replaced with warm cream linen and expansive glass viewing bays overlooking the ocean.

Beside the central fireplace rested a custom silver shadowbox lined with dark red velvet, with a brass plaque reading:

THE BLOODY HIGHBALL — DEDICATED TO CLARA VANCE, WHOSE COURAGE SAVED THE SANTORO EMPIRE.

Inside the shadowbox, preserved beneath museum-grade crystal, was the small metallic flash drive with its dried bloodstains, polished and clean, mounted beside an antique silver serving tray.

I stood before the shadowbox, my fingers gently touching the crystal frame, feeling no pain, no fear—only the deep, unshakeable triumph of a family that had walked through the fire and emerged unbroken.

Footsteps sounded softly on the parquet floor.

Marco walked into the salon, carrying the morning shipping manifests.

He reached out, sliding his arm around my waist, pulling me against his side, kissing my temple with infinite gentleness.

“What are you thinking, Donna Clara?” Marco murmured softly.

I looked up at him, my lips curving into a radiant, beautiful smile.

“I was thinking about that afternoon in the vault, Marco,” I whispered. “I was terrified that my mother would die on the sidewalk.”

Marco smiled down at me, his baritone rich and steady as the tide.

May you like

“And you brought the light to this entire coast, Clara. For all of us.”
