Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Cross Consortium

Lorenzo didn’t hesitate.
He dropped onto one knee on the flagstone terrace, surrounded by the blooming hydrangeas and the crying of the gulls over Lake Michigan.
He opened the velvet box.
Resting inside was not an ordinary diamond bought from a commercial catalog.
Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, six-carat cushion-cut blue sapphire cradled by two delicate anchors carved from white gold—the historic engagement ring of his mother, Donna Maria Falcone, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty years, waiting for the woman who would bring honor back to their name.
"Clara Vance," Lorenzo began, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook her entire being.
"Two months ago, you stood behind a coffee counter and defied me over a wooden chair, fighting for sixty minutes of dignity for old men who had been forgotten by the world. You were surrounded by wealth, arrogance, and ruthless power, yet you never let this city tarnish the pure gold of your spirit."
He took her hand into his massive, warm palm, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles.
"You solved the mystery that broke my father’s heart. You brought twelve lost souls out of the dark, you gave my house its soul back, and you taught me what true sovereignty really means."
He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before her trembling finger.
"Clara Vance, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my fleet?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Clara’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.
"Yes," she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. "Yes, Lorenzo! A thousand times yes!"
Lorenzo swept her up into his arms, lifting her off the flagstones, spinning her beneath the vast spring sky before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their destiny forever.
He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.
It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the Chicago sun.
