Chapter 8 - The Interrogation in the Drydock Vault

By 11:00 AM, the lobby had been cleared of federal agents, and the Falcone Grand Hotel had entered a state of complete administrative transformation.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance and his task force formally executed the asset forfeiture warrants on Victor Cross's private holdings.

With the unsealed records from Zurich, the recovered Treasury bullion from the barge, and the accounting ledgers from Teresa Vance's cedar chest, the Department of Justice seized eighty million dollars in commercial real estate, four private banking facilities, and Cross's luxury estate in Lake Forest.

Under federal maritime restitution law, fifty percent of the recovered assets—over one hundred and twenty-five million dollars—was transferred directly into the newly chartered Thomas Vance and the Twelve Martyrs Memorial Foundation.

The foundation immediately funded lifetime pensions, full college tuitions, and comprehensive healthcare coverage for every descendant of the twelve dockworkers who had perished on Barge 42.

Meanwhile, at Falcone Tower, the corporate board of directors was reconvened on the fiftieth floor for an extraordinary emergency session.

Every executive vice president who had ignored maintenance red-flags, every compliance manager who had stamped reports as unverified field opinion, and every supervisor who had threatened workers with docked pay was systematically terminated on the spot.

Lorenzo Falcone stood at the head of the boardroom table, wearing his navy suit, looking out over the panoramic view of the harbor.

Beside him sat Clara Vance, wearing an elegant dark wool dress, the 1999 union ledger resting before her place setting.

"From this day forward," Lorenzo announced, his deep baritone carrying clearly to every executive in the room, "the Falcone Maritime Corporation will not be governed by slide decks and corporate consulting matrices. It will be governed by the men and women who actually stand on the docks."

He looked down at Clara, his dark eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made her heart swell.

"Clara Vance is appointed Executive Vice President of Harbor Safety and Operations, with full veto power over every commercial vessel, every loading crane, and every drydock in this state. Her word is my law. Anyone who fails to answer her calls will be removed from this company before sunset."

Thomas Thorne, sitting at the end of the table as Chief Technical Advisor Emeritus, slammed his scarred hand onto the mahogany with a booming laugh that shook the boardroom glass.

"Best contract this company ever signed, Don Lorenzo!" the old rigger roared.

Every executive in the room stood to their feet, applauding with genuine, humbled respect for the young woman who had brought an empire back to its foundation.
