Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the Master SuiteBy late April, the transformation of our lives was complete.

The private master suite on the second floor of the Prairie Avenue mansion had become a sanctuary of warmth, laughter, and light.
The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan, while fresh bouquets of white hydrangeas and fragrant magnolias adorned every table.
Clara had enrolled in the prestigious laboratory preschool at the University of Chicago, her days filled with art projects, music lessons, and friends who visited the estate every weekend to ride horses in the private paddocks.
And every Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM, without fail, the long mahogany dining table was filled with family.
Don Carmine Falcone would sit at the head of the table, laughing as he carved the prime rib, while Mrs. Gable brought platters of handmade pasta and warm sourdough bread from the kitchen.
One sunny Saturday afternoon in May, the air was warm and sweet, carrying the fresh scent of lake water and blooming lilacs.
I walked along the stone terrace overlooking the water, wearing an ivory linen shirt and tailored dark trousers, my dark hair dancing in the breeze.
Maria stood by the stone balustrade, wearing a soft emerald silk dress, watching the sailboats glide across the horizon.
When she heard my footsteps on the flagstones, she turned around.
Her face lit up with that rare, breathtaking smile that always made my heart race.
She walked across the terrace to meet me, wrapping her arms around my neck, pulling me gently against her soft, warm frame.
I buried my face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.
“Vanilla, clean rain, and sweet lake breeze,” I murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”
She leaned back against my arms, smiling up into my soulful gray eyes.
“The foundation approved sixty new educational grants this morning, Alessandro,” she whispered.
“And the new logistics berths opened without a single delay,” I smiled against her cheek. “All thanks to our Executive Director.”
“All thanks to a man who keeps his promises,” she replied, tracing the rugged line of my jaw.
I looked down at her, my expression shifting into a register of profound, breathtaking seriousness that made her pulse jump.
“Maria,” I said softly.
“Yes, Alessandro?”

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his father, sliding the chain into my palm.
“Our family is whole, Maria. The storm is over.”
