Chapter 7 - The Extraction of the Master KeyThe heavy double doors of the ballroom burst open with a concussive bang.

Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance walked into the room, flanked by twenty federal marshals in dark tactical windbreakers with arrest warrants drawn.

Behind them followed two armed tactical operators dragging the sniper team’s spotter from the water tower, his hands secured in heavy steel transport cuffs.

The forty syndicate commanders in the room stood with their weapons drawn, training thirty suppressed pistols directly onto Judge Sterling and his personal security detail.

Judge Sterling collapsed to his knees on the parquet floor, his hands covering his face in broken, hopeless agony.

“Vance... please! I am a sitting judge on the municipal bench! I am entitled to judicial immunity!”

“You have no immunity for capital murder and domestic terrorism, Marcus,” Prosecutor Vance said, his voice cold as the Great Lakes gale outside. “The grand jury returned true bills across forty-two counts thirty minutes ago. Your assets are frozen, your credentials are revoked, and your daughter is named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a capital murder plot.”

Two female federal marshals stepped forward, stripping the heavy emerald necklace from Bianca’s throat, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists.

She stood shivering in her ruined gown, her makeup smeared across her cheeks, weeping in blind, suffocating humiliation before forty members of the syndicate she had tried to usurp.

“Alessandro! No! You can't do this to me! I was supposed to be the Donna of this city!”

Her screams echoed down the long gallery until the heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off her voice forever.

Silence returned to the grand ballroom, pure, cold, and vast.

I turned my gaze away from the door and walked slowly back to where Maria stood beside the dais.

I took her hand, lifting her fingers with infinite gentleness as we stood together before the forty most powerful men in Illinois.

“Clara saved this house today,” I announced, my baritone booming through the vaulted hall with undisputed authority. “She broke the silence that held this city hostage for five years. From this day forward, her name is our shield, her mother is the mistress of our foundations, and anyone who threatens their peace will answer directly to my barrel.”

Don Carmine Falcone was the first to move.

The elderly Don lifted his carved cane, bowed his silver head with deep, ancient respect, and raised his crystal glass of Barolo into the air.

“To the little bird,” Falcone declared in his gravelly, resonant voice. “To Donna Maria. And to Don Alessandro! Honor to the brave! Honor to the house of Moretti!”

One by one, the remaining thirty-nine syndicate commanders bowed their heads, their voices joining together in a synchronized, thunderous chorus that shook the crystal chandeliers overhead:

“To the little bird! Long live the house of Moretti!”
