Chapter 10 - Bloodlines and Stolen ChartersThat evening, our family gathered in the private dining salon of the manor for a quiet, intimate celebration.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the gates. No tension in the air.
The long mahogany table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh pine boughs, white calla lilies, and fragrant sprigs of rosemary.
The people seated around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:
Don Salvatore Falcone, sitting tall and proud in his finest suit, laughing as he shared stories of the old days with Marcus.
Mrs. Higgins, sitting beside Theo, helping the little boy cut his roasted chicken while he excitedly explained the anatomy of an eagle.
Dr. Vance, sitting as an honored guest alongside Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance.
And at the head of the table sat Damian Blackwood, looking more relaxed, powerful, and peaceful than he had ever appeared in his life.
At eight o'clock, Damian tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.
The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.
Damian stood up, his deep, resonant baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room.
“Twenty-seven years ago,” Damian began, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made Laurel’s heart overflow, “this house was built on the cold philosophy that power was measured by fear, isolation, and iron walls. I believed that an empire was an armor to keep the world from hurting me.”
He looked directly at Laurel, his smile radiant and full of love.
“Laurel Mercer brought the light back to this house. She reminded me that an empire that does not protect the people who carry its trays is an empire built on sand. She taught me that true power is the courage to stand unbroken when everyone else is running.”
He reached into his breast pocket and produced the small black velvet box containing the two clay stars.
Beside it, he laid an antique velvet jeweler’s case lined with white silk.
He opened the lid.
Resting inside was not an ostentatious diamond purchased from a luxury catalog.
Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, five-carat cushion-cut blue sapphire cradled by two delicate swallows carved from white gold—the ancient symbol of truth, loyalty, and safe return home.
Damian walked around the table, stopping beside Laurel’s chair.
He didn't hesitate.
He dropped onto one knee on the marble floor, taking her right hand into his massive, warm palms.
“Laurel Mercer,” Damian said, his voice ringing with pure, unyielding devotion.
“Will you marry me? Will you be my wife, Theo’s mother-guardian, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my empire?”
Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Laurel’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.
“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Damian! A thousand times yes!”
Damian swept her up into his arms, lifting her off the floor, spinning her beneath the candlelight before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their destiny forever.
He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the chandeliers.
Theo cheered loudly from the table, waving his wooden boat in the air, while Falcone raised his glass with a booming shout of triumph.
