Chapter 14 - The Clay Star Beneath the GlassOn the evening before their wedding, our family gathered in the private dining salon of the manor for an intimate, peaceful celebration.

There were no armed bodyguards checking identification at the gates. No tension in the air.

The long mahogany table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh white hydrangeas and fragrant sprigs of rosemary.

The people seated around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:

Don Salvatore Falcone, sitting tall and proud in his bespoke navy blazer, laughing as he shared stories of the old days with Marcus.

Theo, sitting beside Mrs. Higgins, looking sharp and proud in his new tailored suit, showing Dr. Vance a drawing of a bald eagle he had completed that morning.

Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance, sitting as an honored guest alongside senior maritime union leaders from the docks.

And at the head of the table sat Damian Blackwood, looking more relaxed, powerful, and peaceful than he had ever appeared in his life.

At eight o'clock, Damian tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

Damian stood up, his deep, resonant baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room.

“One month ago,” Damian began, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made Laurel’s heart overflow, “this house was governed by men who believed that power was measured by fear, arrogance, and broken contracts. We were ready to seal an alliance built on deceit, greed, and stolen money.”

He looked directly at Laurel, his smile radiant and full of love.

“Laurel Mercer brought the truth back to this table. She reminded us that an empire that does not protect the people who carry its trays is an empire built on sand. She taught me that true power is the courage to stand unbroken when everyone else is running.”

He reached into his breast pocket and produced an antique mahogany shadowbox lined with dark red velvet.

Inside, mounted side by side beneath museum-grade anti-reflective glass, were the two clay stars:

The cracked, yellowed star from twenty-seven years ago in Albany.

And the fresh, five-pointed star Theo had pressed on the linoleum floor of their tenement.

Beneath them sat a small brass plaque reading:

THE STARS THAT LED US HOME — LAUREL AND DAMIAN, 2026.

He turned his dark, soulful eyes toward Laurel.

“You gave me my life back, Laurel,” Damian murmured, his voice thick with deep emotion. “And tonight, our house is whole.”

He raised his glass of vintage port high into the air.

“To our family. Whole. Safe. And home.”

Every single person in the room stood to their feet, raising their glasses in a joyous, heartfelt cheer:

“To Donna Laurel! To Don Damian! Viva la famiglia!”

Theo cheered loudly from the table, while Falcone raised his glass with a booming shout of celebration.

Damian pulled Laurel gently to her feet, his arms wrapping around her, his lips meeting hers in a tender, lingering kiss that sealed our family's redemption forever.
