Chapter 9 - The Syndicate Council DissolvesThat evening, the grand ballroom of the Bellagio was reconvened for an emergency session of the Nevada Gaming Syndicate Council.

All twenty-four high-rolling casino bosses, foreign delegates, and district commanders who had attended the engagement banquet the night before sat in their high-backed mahogany chairs.

The mood was utterly transformed.

There was no laughter. No clinking champagne flutes.

Every single man in the room sat upright, their eyes fixed on the empty chair at the head of the table, their hands folded neatly on the white tablecloth.

The double doors swung open.

Dominic walked in, wearing an immaculate black three-piece suit, his presence radiating an aura of such absolute, undisputed power that every man in the room held his breath.

And walking beside him, her head held high, her spine straight as an arrow, was me.

Dominic pulled out the heavy armchair to his immediate right—the very chair where Victoria Sterling had sat twenty-four hours earlier, dripping in ice-blue silk and deceit.

He looked down at me with profound respect.

“Please sit, Sylvie.”

I took my seat gracefully, smoothing the dark silk of my dress, resting my splinted left arm on the velvet cushion provided by the staff.

Dominic sat at the head of the table. He rested his forearms on the mahogany wood, looking at the twenty-four men who controlled the wealth of the desert.

“Gentlemen,” Dominic began, his deep baritone cutting through the silence of the room. “Last night, an alliance built on treason, greed, and cowardice was dismantled before our eyes. The Sterling family’s casino licenses have been permanently revoked by federal decree.”

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle across the assembly.

“Harold Sterling and his daughter Victoria will spend the remainder of their natural lives in federal penitentiaries. Their assets—over four hundred million dollars in real estate, gaming rights, and maritime holdings—have been absorbed directly into the Cassel Family Trust.”

He leaned forward, his gray eyes sweeping across three older bosses who had been seen whispering with Harold Sterling the previous week.

“Some of you in this room were aware of the Sterling family's ambitions,” Dominic continued, his voice dropping into that chilling, razor-sharp register. “Some of you were promised percentages of my northern strip properties if you supported their conservatorship petition this afternoon.”

The three bosses went completely white, looking down at their plates in sheer terror.

“I am not going to execute you tonight,” Dominic said softly. “Because tonight, our house is wiping the slate clean. But understand this: from this day forward, any man who conducts business in this state under my name will adhere to one standard: absolute loyalty, complete transparency, and total protection of the innocent.”

He reached out, placing his hand gently over mine where it rested on the table.

“Sylvie Laurent saved this empire last night,” Dominic announced, his voice booming through the vaulted hall with undisputed authority. “She took the blow that was meant for my life. From this moment on, her word is law in this territory. Anyone who fails to treat her with the honor due to the Donna of this house will answer directly to me.”

Don Carmine Falcone, the oldest and most respected capo from the southern casinos, slowly pushed back his heavy armchair.

He stood up, raised his crystal glass of vintage port into the air, and bowed his silver head respectfully toward me.

“To Donna Sylvie,” Falcone declared in a voice of ancient, gravelly reverence. “Honor to the brave.”

One by one, the remaining twenty-three syndicate commanders stood from their chairs, raising their glasses in a synchronized, thunderous toast that shook the chandelier pendants overhead:

“To Donna Sylvie! Honor to the Cassel house!”
