Chapter 5 - The Sister in the Gilded CageAt 8:00 AM, the morning sun rose over the Nevada desert, turning the distant sandstone peaks into towering spires of molten gold and blood-red rock.

In the private VIP suite beneath the Bellagio, Clara was sitting at a glass dining table, eating fresh scrambled eggs and warm croissants brought down by Mrs. Gable herself.
The young girl had been given fresh clothes from the hotel’s luxury boutiques—a soft cashmere sweater in pale lavender and dark denim jeans that fit her perfectly.
When Dominic and I walked into the suite, Clara immediately set her fork down, running over to wrap both of us in a fierce, joyful hug.
“Sylvie! Look! Mrs. Gable brought me chocolate pastries from the French bakery!” Clara cheered, her cheeks bright with healthy color. “And she said that starting next week, I’m being enrolled in the Meadows School on a full academic scholarship!”
I looked over Clara’s shoulder at Dominic, my eyes wide with shock.
The Meadows School was the most prestigious, exclusive private preparatory academy in the entire state of Nevada—an institution reserved for the children of governors, tech billionaires, and federal judges, with an annual tuition that exceeded my entire five-year salary.
“Dominic... you didn't have to do that,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
“Your sister has a ninety-eight percent grade average in advanced mathematics, Sylvie,” Dominic replied calmly, resting a hand gently on Clara’s shoulder. “She belongs in a laboratory, not worrying about whether her sister can afford rent on Desert Inn Road. Her tuition, her university trust, and her medical coverage have been placed in an irrevocable family endowment.”
Clara looked up at Dominic with adoration, her small hands clutching his forearm.
“Are you really going to marry my sister, Mr. Dominic?”
I nearly choked on my breath, my cheeks flaming with instant, burning heat.
“Clara! Hush! That’s completely—”
Dominic didn't laugh. He didn't pull away.
He looked down at the sixteen-year-old girl with an expression of calm, unyielding solemnity that made my heart hammer violently against my ribs.
“If your sister will have me, Clara,” Dominic said softly, his gray eyes shifting to meet mine across the small space, “there is no other woman on this earth who will ever take that seat.”
My pulse roared in my ears. The world seemed to stop spinning for three breathless seconds.
Before I could find my voice, Marco stepped into the suite, his face rigid with operational focus.
“Boss. The decoy convoy has departed the hotel garage. Five armored Suburbans, lead limousine carrying two ballistic mannequins in wedding attire. The route is live.”
Dominic’s warm, gentle expression instantly snapped back into the terrifying mask of the sovereign.
“And our strike team?”
“Positioned on the high ridges above mile marker thirty-four,” Marco reported. “Two Black Hawk helicopters equipped with forward infrared sensors are airborne from the Nellis corridor.”

Dominic turned back to me, taking my uninjured hand into his.
“It is time, Sylvie. Let us go finish this war.”
