Chapter 12 - The Trap Sprung Under Crystal Chandeliers

Forty-eight hours later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel on Michigan
Avenue was dressed in white roses, crystal candelabras, and silk drapery.
It was supposed to be the rehearsal dinner for the wedding of the century.
Two hundred and fifty guests—the absolute pinnacle of Chicago’s high society,
judges, aldermen, federal prosecutors, and syndicate elders—sat beneath the
historic gold-leaf ceiling, murmuring with nervous anticipation.
Rumors had flooded the city for two days: whispers of raids in Cicero, emergency
asset transfers, and the sudden disappearance of Carmine Bellini.
At the head table, two chairs sat empty beneath a towering arch of imported
white orchids.
At exactly eight o’clock, the massive double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The room fell instantly silent. The orchestra ceased playing.
Luca Moretti walked down the center aisle.
He was breathtaking. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture
commanding, radiating an aura of absolute, undisputed authority.
And on his arm, walking beside him with her head held high, was not Vanessa
Bellini.
It was me.
I wore a floor-length emerald silk gown that swept the floor with quiet grace,
my dark hair elegantly pinned up, leaving my neck bare save for a simple,
stunning diamond pendant. The bruise on my cheek had faded to a faint shadow,
hidden beneath professional makeup, but I carried myself not as an injured maid,
but as a woman who had walked through gunfire and survived.
Gasps rippled across the tables like wildfire.
Alderman Russo stood half out of his chair. Syndicate capos leaned forward,
their eyes wide with disbelief.
Luca led me to the center of the raised dais, stopping in front of the
microphone at the head table.
He didn't release my hand. His fingers remained laced through mine, warm,
steady, and unbreakable.
Luca reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, sleek titanium flash
drive. He handed it to the head of the audio-visual team beside the stage.
“Play it,” Luca commanded softly.
A massive projection screen descended from the ceiling behind the head table.
The lights in the ballroom dimmed.
Suddenly, the dual monitors on the screen flickered to life.
The first video showed William Mercer and Vanessa in the upstairs guest room,
followed by the clear audio recording of Vanessa ordering Mercer to fabricate
the affair with Sophia:
“Make sure Sophia believes Luca was sleeping with me since 2018. If she believes
it, she’ll burn the signet seal before he can touch the docks.”
The ballroom erupted into shocked shouts and whispers.
Then, the second recording played: the high-resolution surveillance video of
Vanessa in the estate kitchen, calmly adding three drops of deadly nightshade
from the crystal dropper into my ceramic mug.
Beside the video, Dr. Harris’s official toxicological report appeared on the
screen in high-definition:
CHEMICAL ANALYSIS CONFIRMED: CONCENTRATED ATROPA BELLADONNA. FATAL DOSAGE
DETECTED.
Socialites covered their mouths in horror. Three city councilmen pushed their
chairs back in sheer disgust.
Luca stepped up to the microphone.
His voice resonated through the massive ballroom with the cold, absolute
finality of an iron gavel:
“The engagement between the Moretti family and Vanessa Bellini is permanently
terminated,” Luca announced. “Earlier this morning, federal authorities took
Carmine Bellini and his daughter into custody at a private airstrip in Rockford.
They have been formally indicted on charges of attempted murder, extortion,
commercial sabotage, and federal racketeering.”
He paused, letting the magnitude of his words settle over the stunned assembly.
“The Bellini territory is no more,” Luca continued. “The northern docks, the
freight lines, and the shipping charters have been consolidated under the
unified authority of the Moretti Council.”
He turned his head slowly, looking down at me.
The icy hardness in his eyes melted into a profound, breathtaking warmth that
silenced every whispered rumor in the room.
“And for those of you wondering who stands beside me tonight,” Luca said, his
voice carrying clearly to every corner of the grand hall:
“This is Olivia Hayes. The woman who risked her life to uncover the truth, who
refused to break under threat of death, and who holds the honor of this family
in the palm of her hand.”
He brought my hand to his lips, pressing a slow, deliberate kiss to my knuckles

before the entire city of Chicago.
The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
