Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW RETURNS

Two months passed in a blur of boardrooms, university lectures, and quiet, stolen evenings spent walking along the shores of Lake Michigan. The estate was peaceful. Too peaceful. It was a warm Tuesday afternoon in late June. Natalie was sitting in her office reviewing the quarterly budget reports when her secure intercom buzzed. "Natalie," Luca’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding uncharacteristically tense. "Get to my private study immediately. Bring the Vanguard asset ledger from 2024." "On my way," Natalie replied, grabbing the heavy leather-bound binder off her shelf. She hurried down the carpeted hallway and tapped twice on the heavy oak door of Luca’s study before pushing it open. Inside, Luca wasn't alone. Standing by the window was a middle-aged man in a rumpled gray trench coat, holding a cup of cold tea. His face was weathered, scarred across the bridge of his nose, bearing the unmistakable stamp of a federal intelligence agent. "Natalie, this is Special Agent Vance from the FBI’s Organized Crime Division," Luca introduced them without preamble. "Vance, this is Natalie Brooks, my Director of Estate Operations." Vance nodded grimly, tipping his head in greeting. "Miss Brooks. I wish we were meeting under better circumstances." Natalie clutched the binder to her chest. "What's happened?" Vance looked at Luca before speaking. "Two days ago, federal corrections guards at the maximum-security black site in Colorado reported a security breach." Luca’s jaw tightened. "A breach?" "Not from the outside," Vance corrected, setting his teacup down on the side table. "From the inside. Vanessa Bellini didn't just walk into our custody by accident back in April. She left a digital breadcrumb trail." Natalie’s blood ran cold. "What kind of breadcrumb trail?" Vance pulled a black encrypted tablet from his coat pocket and placed it on Luca’s desk. He tapped the screen, bringing up a complex network diagram of glowing red and blue nodes. "Before Vanessa was arrested, she managed to fragment the Vanguard’s core financial database and hide encrypted access keys inside three different shell corporations across Europe," Vance explained. "And according to our decrypted intercept logs from yesterday morning... someone just activated the primary key." Luca leaned over the desk, his eyes narrowing as he studied the data nodes. "Who?" "A man named Viktor Vance—no relation to me," the agent said grimly. "Viktor is the former enforcer and right-hand man of the Vanguard's supreme commander. He's been living off the grid in Zurich for the past ten years." Natalie stepped forward, placing the budget binder down. "If Viktor has the keys, does that mean the Vanguard is rebuilding?" "Worse," Special Agent Vance said, looking directly at Luca. "They aren't just rebuilding. They're launching a coordinated retaliatory strike against the Moretti family assets across the Midwest. And their primary target isn't Luca's shipping ports anymore." Luca’s head snapped up. "What is it?" "It's you, Miss Brooks." The study went dead silent. Natalie staggered back a half-step, her breath catching in her throat. "Me? Why me?" "Because you're the one who found the flash drive in Vanessa's desk," Agent Vance stated matter-of-factly. "You're the one who cracked the financial paper trail that allowed federal prosecutors to freeze their European accounts. To Viktor, you aren't just an estate manager. You're the person who broke their empire." Luca moved with terrifying speed. In two strides, he was standing between Natalie and the desk, his body forming a physical shield. "She's not staying here," Luca declared, his voice dropping into the lethal register Natalie hadn't heard in months. "If Viktor thinks he can touch her, he has another thing coming." "Luca, wait," Natalie said, resting a trembling hand on his arm. "If they're coming after me, running won't stop them." "You aren't running," Luca said, turning to look down at her, his dark eyes burning with fierce determination. "We're going on the offensive."
