Chapter 5 - THE SYNDICATE'S SHADOW

The penthouse suite of the Moretti estate looked out over the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago. But tonight, the view offered no comfort. Liam sat on the velvet sofa, holding a cup of black coffee that Natalie had brought him. Leo had finally fallen asleep, curled up like a small, defenseless animal across Liam’s lap. Luca stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the snowy night. He hadn't spoken a word since they left suite 404. Downstairs, the engagement dinner had been cleared out. The guests had been sent home under strict non-disclosure threats, escorted by armed Moretti enforcers. Reynolds was locked in the basement wine cellar, awaiting a very different kind of interrogation. And Vanessa... Vanessa was locked in her bedroom on the second floor, guarded by two men who wouldn't let her touch a phone, a computer, or a glass of water. "Who sent it?" Liam asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence. He didn't want to wake his son. Luca didn't turn around. "The Vanguard Syndicate," Luca replied, his voice flat. Liam flinched. "The Vanguard... I thought they were wiped out during the dock wars five years ago." "They went underground," Luca said, turning to face them. "They restructured. And apparently, they’ve been using Vanessa as an insider to bleed the Moretti logistics network dry for the past eighteen months." Natalie gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth. "Vanessa? But... she's marrying into your family." "She was marrying into an empire," Luca corrected her grimly. "The Vanguard didn't care about the wedding. They cared about the access codes to our shipping ports in Lake Michigan. Vanessa was their key. And Leo... Leo was their insurance policy." Liam tightened his grip around his sleeping son. "Insurance for what?" "To force you into silence, Liam. Or to force me into a tactical blunder." Luca walked over to the coffee table and tossed a thick manila folder down onto the glass top. Natalie stepped closer, her eyes scanning the top document. It was a series of financial wire transfers routed through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Every single transaction was signed with Vanessa Bellini’s digital signature. "She wasn't just a poor girl trying to escape her past," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous purr. "She was trained by them. Placed in my path deliberately three years ago." Natalie looked at Luca. For all his terrifying power, for all the blood on his family's hands, there was something undeniably tragic in his eyes tonight. He had been played. Not just by a woman he intended to make his wife, but by an entire network of professional liars. "What happens now?" Natalie asked softly. Luca looked down at her. The harshness in his gaze softened just a fraction when it met hers. "Now, Natalie, we lay a trap." Natalie’s breath caught. "A trap?" "The Vanguard thinks they have the upper hand because they have Leo," Luca explained, walking toward his executive desk and unlocking a heavy steel drawer. "They don't know my security team secured the perimeter cameras three hours before the dinner started. The man who dropped Leo off through the window didn't escape. He's currently tied to a chair in our lower-level parking garage." Liam’s eyes flashed with fierce hope. "Can he talk?" "He'll talk," Luca said, pulling a heavy brass key from his pocket and sliding it across the desk toward Liam. "Or he'll wish he never learned how." Natalie watched Luca with a mixture of awe and absolute dread. This was the reality of the world she lived in—a world hidden beneath the polished floors and expensive suits of the Moretti estate. A world of blood, betrayal, and cold, calculated vengeance. "Mr. Moretti," Natalie said, her voice steadying despite her racing heart. "What do you want me to do?" Luca looked at her for a long moment. He walked over, stopping just inches away from her. "You saved Mrs. Ellis from humiliation tonight, Natalie. You showed compassion when everyone else in this room was ready to step on her." He reached out, his large, warm hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face. "I need you to take Mrs. Ellis and Leo to our safe house in Lake Geneva," Luca said quietly. "Pack a bag. My most trusted men will drive you. Do not trust anyone else in this house—not even the kitchen staff." Natalie’s eyes widened. "And you?" Luca turned away, picking up his suit jacket and slipping it over his broad shoulders. "I have a wedding dress to inspect," Luca said, his lips curling into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "And an old friend to visit in the basement."
