Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT RAID AT LAKE MICHIGAN

The Chicago docks at midnight looked like a graveyard of steel and fog. The massive shipping cranes loomed like skeletal giants against the black sky of Lake Michigan. Freezing mist rolled off the water, biting through heavy tactical gear. A convoy of three black SUVs pulled up silently behind a stack of rusted shipping containers, their headlights completely off. Luca Moretti stepped out of the lead vehicle. He wore a matte-black ballistic vest over a dark turtleneck, an assault rifle slung across his chest. Behind him, twelve of his most elite enforcers fanned out into the shadows with military precision. "Thermal drone confirms six hostiles inside Warehouse 7," the tactical lead whispered, handing Luca a portable monitor. "They're unloading crates marked with Moretti logistics stamps. Stolen cargo." Luca stared at the grainy thermal signatures moving across the screen. "Is Vanessa among them?" Luca asked. "Negative, boss. But we intercepted a comms chatter. She has a private chopper scheduled to lift off from the downtown heliport at 2:00 AM." Luca clicked his tongue against his teeth. "She thinks she can walk away with a Vanguard pension," Luca murmured. "Not on my watch." He raised his hand, signaling the assault. "Move in. Silence only. I want the cargo intact, and I want their commander alive." The enforcers melted into the fog like ghosts. Luca moved with them, his boots making almost no sound on the wet concrete. They reached the side door of Warehouse 7. A single guard stood smoking a cigarette against the corrugated metal wall, his breath pluming white in the freezing air. Before the man could even reach for his holster, two Moretti operatives stepped out of the mist. A swift, silent takedown—one hand over the mouth, a sharp twist of the neck—and the guard crumpled to the ground without a sound. Luca stepped over the body, pulled the heavy sliding door open by an inch, and peered inside. The warehouse was lit by harsh overhead halogen lamps. Stacks of high-tech server racks and weapons crates sat piled high. In the center of the room stood a man with a scarred cheek, barking orders into a handheld radio. "Get those server backups loaded onto the transport van!" the commander shouted in harsh Russian-accented English. "If Moretti traces this IP address, we're all dead men!" Luca raised his rifle, sighted down the barrel through the gap in the door, and kicked it wide open. "Too late," Luca's voice boomed across the cavernous warehouse. Gunfire erupted instantly. Sparks flew as bullets ricocheted off concrete floors and steel shipping containers. The Vanguard guards scattered for cover, returning heavy fire with submachine guns. Luca rolled behind a stack of wooden crates, returning steady, controlled shots that dropped two guards within three seconds. "Flank right! Cut off their exit!" Luca yelled to his men. The firefight was intense, violent, and mercifully short. Within four minutes, the warehouse fell silent, save for the groans of wounded mercenaries and the hiss of a ruptured hydraulic line. Luca walked through the drifting gun smoke, his boots crunching on shattered safety glass. He stopped in front of the Vanguard commander, who was clutching a bleeding shoulder while pinned beneath a fallen steel rack. "You're... you're Moretti," the commander spat, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth. "You think you've won? Vanessa is already gone. She has the clearance codes. The federal indictments against your family are already on a senator's desk." Luca knelt down beside the wounded man. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't look angry. He simply placed the barrel of his sidearm against the commander's uninjured shoulder. "Where is she meeting her handler?" Luca asked softly. The commander laughed, coughing up blood. "Go to hell." Luca adjusted the angle of the gun. "I asked you a question." "The... the Grand Meridian Hotel penthouse," the man gasped, his bravado finally breaking under the cold reality of death. "She's trading the logistics keys for a passport and a new face." Luca stood up, holstering his weapon. He turned to his lead enforcer. "Secure the cargo. Call the clean-up crew." "And him, boss?" the enforcer asked, gesturing to the wounded commander. Luca didn't even look back. "Feed him to the fishes in Lake Michigan. Make sure he remembers how cold the water is."
