Chapter 13 - THE RECKONING AT THE SILO

Viktor groaned, pressing his hand against his bleeding shoulder as he slumped against the wooden crates. "You... you can't lock me away forever," Viktor wheezed, glaring up at Luca. "The Vanguard... we're an idea. You can't kill an idea." Luca walked slowly toward him, his boots clicking rhythmically on the concrete floor. "Ideas die when the men funding them run out of money," Luca said coldly. "And thanks to Miss Brooks here, your European accounts were seized by Interpol five minutes before we walked through that door." Viktor’s eyes widened in horror. "You... you coordinated with Interpol?" "Did you really think I’d come to an abandoned grain silo without backup?" Luca asked with a dark smile. Outside, the heavy thrum of helicopter rotors shook the corrugated metal roof of the silo. Blue and red emergency lights flashed through the high, grimy windows as federal tactical units surrounded the property. The heavy sliding doors were blown open with a concussive boom, and a dozen heavily armed FBI agents rushed into the room, securing the perimeter within seconds. Special Agent Vance walked through the agents, stopping in front of Luca and Natalie. "Looks like you boys had all the fun," Vance said, eyeing the wounded Viktor on the floor. "Paramedics are on their way. He'll stand trial in federal court by next month." Vance turned his gaze to Natalie, offering a respectful nod. "And excellent work on the terminal override, Miss Brooks. That saved us months of digital forensics work." "Thank you, Agent Vance," Natalie replied politely, still holding onto the sleeve of Luca’s coat. As the federal agents slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto Viktor and hauled him toward the exit, Luca turned to Natalie. "Let'imacy go home," he whispered. The drive back to the Moretti estate was quiet, save for the steady rhythm of the windshield wipers clearing away the remnants of the summer storm. When they finally arrived, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the Chicago sky in shades of bruised purple and brilliant gold. Instead of going straight to the main house, Luca led Natalie down the winding stone path toward the private rose garden behind the estate. Rows of white, red, and yellow roses bloomed under the morning dew—many of them cultivated by Virgo as part of Natalie’s experimental floral lines. In the center of the garden stood a small, wrought-iron gazebo draped in white ivy. Natalie stopped walking, her breath catching in her throat. Inside the gazebo stood a small mahogany table covered in white linen, two crystal flutes, and a single black velvet ring box resting on a bed of fresh red rose petals. Natalie turned to look at Luca. His face was completely uncovered, stripped of the armor he wore for the world. "Luca..." she whispered. "What is this?" Luca reached out, taking both of her hands in his. His palms were warm, steady, and secure. "When I met you, you were a housemaid trying to feed an old woman who had been discarded by my fiancée," Luca said, his voice deep and steady. "You didn't bow. You didn't run. You stood your ground for someone else's dignity." He dropped slowly to one knee on the damp cobblestone path. Natalie’s hands flew to her mouth, tears instantly spilling over her eyelashes. "You brought life back into this dark house," Luca continued, opening the velvet box. Inside lay a ring—not a massive, ostentatious diamond like the one he had given Vanessa, but a delicate platinum band set with a brilliant round sapphire, flanked by two small white diamonds. "You saved my estate, you saved my sanity, and you saved my heart." He looked up into her tear-filled eyes. "Natalie Brooks... will you do me the honor of being my wife? Not as a syndicate arrangement, not as an alliance, but as the only woman I will ever love?" Natalie didn't hesitate for a single second. "Yes," she sobbed, throwing her arms around his neck as he stood up, pulling her into a fierce, passionate embrace. "Yes, Luca. A million times yes." He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger, sealing the promise with a kiss that tasted of victory, redemption, and a brand-new beginning.
