THE MAFIA'S LEDGER QUEEN / Chapter 4 / 14

Chapter 5 - A Sovereign in the Server's VestDonna Sofia slowly pushed the tweed blanket from her lap with both hands.

The frail, trembling posture she had maintained fell away, replaced by the crushing, terrifying majesty that had ruled the Atlantic underworld for thirty years.

She turned her dark eyes toward Laura, her scarred fingers reaching out to take the younger woman’s hand.

“Stand tall, child,” the matriarch commanded, her voice ringing clear and authoritative across the room. “You wore the Moretti colors tonight when you checked that heiress’s kick. A woman who can stare down a Moretti without flinching does not weep over a villa. In this house, we do not apologize for our courage.”

She looked up at her son.

“Dominic.”

“Yes, Mamma.”

“The Moretti family didn't just spill wine tonight,” Donna Sofia said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, clinical fury that chilled the room. “Victoria’s father, Salvatore Moretti, spent the last six months meeting with federal prosecutors in Philadelphia. He used forged gaming manifests from 2018 to siphon seventy million dollars from our high-stakes vaults—the vaults that carry my family’s name.”

The sixty guests along the perimeter gasped in collective, terrified realization.

Dominic’s jaw set into unyielding iron.

“You have the encrypted logs, Mamma?”

Donna Sofia lifted the small, cracked black calfskin notebook.

She untied the golden cord, opened the worn leather cover, and pulled a high-density titanium micro-drive from the binding seam.

She handed it directly to Laura.

“Laura holds the ledger, Dominic,” the Dowager announced, her voice booming across the ballroom like a church bell. “Salvatore Moretti didn't just steal chips. Ten years ago, he was the man who sabotaged the brakes on my car outside Zurich.”

The entire room went dead silent.

Dominic Moretti’s dark eyes flared with an ocean of primeval, awakened slaughter.

Ten years of hunting through rival syndicates across Europe, believing his mother had died in a tragic mountain accident.

And the man who had ordered the sabotage was sitting in a luxury suite at the Ocean Casino, preparing to sign an unencumbered merger contract tomorrow morning.

Dominic turned his head toward Marco.

“Marco.”

“Command, Don Dominic.”

“Convene the Council of Atlantic Barons at our private compound on the inlet before midnight,” Dominic commanded, his voice deadly and quiet. “Bring Salvatore Moretti from his suite under an armed boarding party of sixty men. It is time to settle our accounts with the dead.”
