THE MAFIA'S LEDGER QUEEN / Chapter 9 / 14

Chapter 10 - Bloodlines of the Shoreline EmpireTwo weeks later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon, Dominic, Donna Sofia, and Laura brought fresh white calla lilies to the historic cemetery on the bluffs overlooking the ocean.

The cemetery was quiet, peaceful, and bathed in golden autumn light that filtered through the ancient maritime pines.

They walked down a secluded gravel path until they reached a beautiful, shaded plot surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and fragrant rosemary bushes.

Standing beneath a towering granite cross was the memorial cenotaph of Dominic’s father, Don Antonio Moretti:

Antonio Moretti (1945–2014) — Sovereign of the Sands, A Man of Honor.

Fresh bouquets of white calla lilies, red roses, and fragrant sweet basil rested at the base of the stone.

Donna Sofia knelt beside her late husband’s monument, resting her weathered hand on the carved granite, her dark eyes bright with tears of profound, eternal peace.

“We brought the truth home, Antonio,” the Dowager whispered softly through her tears. “The traitors are broken. The shoreline is clean. The ledger has been settled.”

Dominic stepped forward, kneeling beside his mother on the gravel path, his hand resting respectfully on the stone.

“Your house is in honorable hands, Dad,” Dominic murmured, his deep baritone thick with resonant emotion. “The woman who saved Mother stands at our table. In this house, your courage will never be forgotten.”

Laura knelt beside them, placing the black calfskin notebook beside the lilies on the stone—its leather conditioned and its gold cord gleaming in the autumn sun.

“Thank you, Don Antonio,” Laura murmured softly. “We will protect the family forever.”

Dominic stood up, pulling his mother and Laura into his arms, wrapping his heavy wool overcoat around both of them, shielding them from the coastal wind.

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into Laura’s palm.

“Our family is whole, Laura. The ocean will never swallow us again.”
