THE MAFIA'S TITANIUM THRONE / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - A Child in the Sovereign’s ShadowIn the east private salon, a fire of split cedar crackled in the hearth, throwing warm golden light across the hand-carved mahogany paneling.

Rose Keller sat on the edge of the velvet sofa, clutching a mug of tea with white knuckles, while eight-year-old Mia sat on the floor with her legs crossed, carefully re-tying the frayed velvet bow in her copper curls.

The heavy pocket doors slid open.

Alexander walked into the room.

He did not wear a jacket. He stood tall, towering and magnificent, the dark ink of the sea serpent coiled around his throat standing stark against his white shirt.

Rose rose instantly to her feet, dropping a low, terrified curtsy.

“Don Moretti... please, we don't need any money, we were only trying to help—I swear Mia didn't mean any disrespect—”

Alexander raised a single hand.

The room fell instantly silent.

He walked across the Persian rug, stopping two feet in front of the little girl.

He did not tower over her. With slow, measured grace, Alexander bent both knees and dropped down onto one knee on the carpet before the eight-year-old child.

Rose choked back a sob of pure, stunned disbelief.

Alexander Moretti had never knelt before a living soul.

He reached into his breast pocket and produced an official cashier’s check drawn from the Bank of New York:

PAY TO THE ORDER OF ROSE AND MIA KELLER — $2,000,000.00 USD.

He placed the check into Mia’s small hands.

“Two million dollars, Mia,” Alexander murmured, his deep baritone carrying an unshakeable, solemn gravity. “As promised before the Five Families.”

Mia looked down at the numbers, then up into his dark eyes, her small lips curving into a quiet smile.

“Did the floor feel cold, Mr. Moretti?”

“It felt like life, little bird,” Alexander replied softly, his rough thumb gently brushing a speck of soot from her cheek. “You gave this house its king back. And no one in this family will ever let you wear scuffed shoes again.”

He looked up at Rose.

“Your employment in the laundry is terminated, Rose.”

Rose’s face blanched. “Don Moretti... please...”

“You are appointed Executive Trustee of the newly chartered Mia Keller Foundation for Children's Medical Research,” Alexander said, rising smoothly to his feet. “You will oversee a twenty-million-dollar endowment providing free surgeries, specialized prosthetics, and housing defense for low-income working families across New York.”

He turned to Frank.

“Deed the four-bedroom brownstone on Brooklyn Heights to Rose Keller tonight. Full security detail. Full municipal protection.”

Rose sank to her knees on the carpet, weeping with a relief so profound her entire body shook, clutching her daughter against her chest.
