Chapter 9 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE STUDYThe double doors of the master study were unlocked.

When Luca pushed them open, the room was bathed in the dim amber glow of a single desk lamp.
Vanessa Bellini stood by the floor-to-ceiling arched windows, clutching a glass of scotch with shaking hands. She had discarded her formal evening jacket, her silk blouse slightly wrinkled, her carefully styled hair coming undone around her shoulders.
When she heard the door click shut behind us, she turned around—expecting Luca alone.
Instead, she saw Luca walking in, followed closely by me.
Vanessa’s face twisted in disgust. “What is the meaning of this? Why is the maid standing in my study?”
“Drop the act, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice a low, lethal hum that made the air in the room freeze. He tossed the stolen digital drive and the St. Jude hospital dossier directly onto the mahogany desk in front of her. “The game is over.”
Vanessa stared down at the documents. The glass in her hand slipped from her fingers, shattering against the Persian rug, splashing amber liquid across the floor.
For a second, she looked cornered. Then, remarkably, her expression shifted. A cold, cynical smirk spread across her crimson lips.
“Oh, please,” Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms and lifting her chin with aristocratic arrogance. “You actually believe the delusional ramblings of a brain-damaged delivery truck driver? You're going to throw away our political alliance, our wedding, and your entire social standing over a hysterical maid?”
“It’s not a delusion, Vanessa,” I stepped forward, my voice ringing out clear, sharp, and fierce. “I saw the adoption papers. I saw the bank routing numbers linked to your family's shell corporations. You stole my baby girl from the nursery at St. Jude’s Hospital three years ago!”
Vanessa sneered at me, looking down her nose as if I were dirt beneath her expensive heels.
“And what if I did?” Vanessa hissed, venom dripping from every word. “You were nothing. A broke, exhausted nobody living in a rat-infested apartment in the Bronx. You wouldn't have survived a week trying to raise a child in poverty. I gave that baby a secure, wealthy future in Europe. You should be thanking me!”
Hearing those words—admitting the theft with such casual, sociopathic cruelty—sent a shockwave of white-hot rage through my chest.
Before I could lunge forward, Luca moved.
In two swift, blinding strides, Luca crossed the room, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her silk blouse, and slammed her hard against the wooden bookshelves with a deafening crash.
Books tumbled from the shelves, raining down around them.
Vanessa gasped, her eyes going wide with genuine terror as she looked up into the face of the man she thought she could manipulate.
“Luca... stop! What are you doing? I'm your fiancée!” she choked out, clawing at his hands.
“You were never my fiancée, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying fury. “You were a political arrangement brokered by corrupt cowards. But touching an innocent child... stealing a mother’s flesh and blood to cover your family's criminal enterprise... that is something I don't forgive.”
He shoved her back against the shelf, letting her slump to the floor, gasping for air.
“Marcus,” Luca called out without turning around.
The heavy doors swung open instantly.
“Boss.”
“Prepare the private jet. Notify our contacts in Milan and our asset recovery team in Tuscany. We are flying to Italy tonight.”
May you like
Luca turned back to me, extending his hand with a fierce, unwavering promise in his eyes.
“We're going to bring our daughter home, Rachel.”
