Chapter 1 - The Dark Whisper at the Engagement Table

The silence that fell over the Moretti dining room was heavier than the crystal chandelier hanging above us. Thirty-six of Chicago’s most powerful elite sat frozen, their forks hovering inches from their plates, their eyes darting nervously between Luca Moretti, his trembling mother Teresa, and the pale, panic-stricken face of Michael Moretti standing in the doorway.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. I was only twenty-five years old, working as a humble maid to pay for my mother's medical bills, yet I had somehow stumbled into the center of a lethal mafia storm.

“Hannah,” Luca’s voice cut through the silence like a razor-sharp blade. It wasn't loud, but it commanded absolute terror. “Repeat what my brother said.”

Michael forced an uneasy, arrogant smirk, though a bead of sweat rolled down his immaculate temple. “Don’t listen to the hired help, Luca. The old woman is losing her mind, and this girl is just making things up to keep her job. Look at them—they're conspiring to ruin my engagement party.”

“Shut up, Michael,” Luca didn't even look at his brother. His dark, piercing gaze remained locked on me. “Hannah. I want to hear it from you.”

I swallowed hard, tasting the metallic fear on my tongue. I glanced at Teresa. Her old, wrinkled hand squeezed mine with a surprising strength, silently urging me to speak the truth. She had lived in fear for four long years, hiding a horrific secret that had eaten away at her soul.

“Mr. Moretti,” I began, my voice shaking before steadying itself with quiet resolve. “Yesterday afternoon, while I was cleaning the study upstairs, I heard raised voices coming from your mother's private sitting room. The door wasn't fully closed. I didn't mean to listen, but... but I heard your brother speaking to Mrs. Moretti.”

Michael took a threatening step forward, his hands clenching into fists inside his suit pockets. “You lying little bitch—!”

“Enough!” Luca slammed his heavy crystal glass onto the mahogany table. The sharp crack made half the guests flinch. The aura of absolute authority radiated from him, silencing the room instantly. “Go on, Hannah.”

“Mr. Michael was telling your mother that she had to leave the mansion immediately,” I continued, every word heavy with consequence. “He told her that if she ever mentioned the medicine bottle on the night your father died, he would make sure she ended up in a psychiatric ward where no one would ever believe a single word she said. And he said... he said that if anyone tried to interfere, he would destroy them, starting with me.”

Vanessa Bellini, standing beside Luca in her stunning red gown, let out a sharp, theatrical gasp. “This is absolute madness! Luca, how can you listen to this pathetic servant over your own flesh and blood? We need to have her thrown out into the street right this instant!”

But Luca didn't move. He stood slowly from his chair, towering over the table. The way his broad shoulders tensed under his tailored black suit told me that a tempest was brewing—one that would consume everyone who had a hand in this deception. He turned his head slowly, locking his terrifying, ice-cold eyes onto his younger brother.

“Is that true, Michael?” Luca’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper. “Were you in our father’s bedroom the night he passed away?”

Michael’s confident facade finally cracked completely. His lips parted, but no sound came out. The absence of a denial spoke louder than a thousand words. In the Chicago underworld, a betrayal of blood was the ultimate sin, punishable by death. And tonight, the Moretti empire was about to tear itself apart from the inside out.
