Chapter 7 - Blood is Thicker Than Water, But Greed is Stronger

The elimination of Victor Vance effectively shattered the last remnants of the internal coup. Within forty-eight hours, Luca had firmly re-established absolute control over the Moretti syndicate, purging the corrupt elements and cementing his legacy not just as a feared mafia boss, but as a ruthless protector of his family's honor.

Michael and Vanessa were permanently exiled from Chicago, stripped of their assets, and sent away under heavy guard to a remote property overseas where they would never pose a threat again. The mansion slowly returned to a state of peaceful tranquility, though nothing between Luca and me could ever go back to being ordinary.

It was a crisp Sunday afternoon. The autumn sunlight streamed through the high glass windows of the grand solarium, where Teresa was sitting comfortably, knitting a cashmere scarf. I sat across from her, quietly reading a medical report, though my mind was elsewhere.

“You look distracted today, Hannah,” Teresa noted with a knowing smile, her sharp eyes twinkling behind her spectacles.

I flushed, lowering my book. “I’m just... thinking about everything that’s happened, Mrs. Moretti.”

“Call me Teresa, dear. We’ve been through a war together; formal titles are quite unnecessary now,” she chuckled softly, setting her knitting needles down. She leaned forward, studying my face intently. “And you’re thinking about my son, aren't you?”

Before I could formulate a denial, the solarium doors opened, and Luca walked in. He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing a simple black button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. When he looked at me, a soft, tender expression crossed his face—one that he reserved exclusively for his mother and me.

“Mom,” Luca greeted softly, kissing her cheek before turning his gaze toward me. “Hannah. Can I steal you for a moment? There’s something I want to show you in the courtyard.”

I nodded, standing up and following him out through the glass doors into the private enclosed garden where vibrant red roses were in full bloom.

The autumn breeze rustled through the oak trees as Luca stopped by the stone fountain, turning to face me. The usual hardened edge of the mafia boss was completely gone, replaced by a raw, vulnerable sincerity that took my breath away.

“Hannah,” Luca began, his voice surprisingly hesitant. “When you stood up to Vanessa that night—when you risked your life to protect my mother and refused to let them intimidate you—you didn't just save my family. You woke something up inside me that I thought had died years ago.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “Luca... you don't have to—”

“I do,” he interrupted gently, taking both of my hands in his warm, powerful palms. “For years, I believed that love and weakness were the same thing in our world. I thought I had to be made of stone to protect what was mine. But you showed me that true strength comes from compassion, loyalty, and standing beside the person who holds your heart.”

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I looked up at him. “I was just a maid trying to survive, Luca.”

“You were never just a maid,” he whispered, a tender smile gracing his lips. “You were the light that brought my family back from the dark. Stay with me, Hannah. Not as an employee, not as a guest... but as my equal. As my partner in everything.”
