Chapter 14 - The Final Stand for Justice and Family

With the archives burned and the syndicate officially restructured into a legitimate global conglomerate—the Moretti Holdings Group—the final legal hurdles remaining from Michael’s illegal activities had to be addressed in the open light of day.
Two weeks later, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was packed with journalists, legal teams, and investigators. The trial of Michael Moretti and his co-conspirators was underway, marking the first time in decades that a major Chicago syndicate leader faced public accountability without underground interference.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Luca and Teresa. For the first time in her life, Teresa didn't look frail or frightened. She wore an elegant emerald-green coat, her head held high with quiet dignity as she faced the courtroom.
When the federal judge banged his gavel, calling for absolute silence, the jury foreman stood up to read the verdict.
“On all counts of conspiracy, financial fraud, and involvement in the involuntary manslaughter of James Moretti, the jury finds the defendant, Michael Moretti, guilty.”
A collective gasp rippled through the packed courtroom. Michael, sitting at the defense table, buried his face in his hands, realizing that his lifetime of privilege and betrayal had finally caught up with him in a court of law that could not be bought.
The judge handed down a sentence of thirty years without the possibility of parole.
As the bailiffs led a defeated Michael away in handcuffs, he briefly caught my eye across the courtroom. There was no hatred left in my heart—only profound pity for a man who had traded his family, his honor, and his soul for power that ultimately turned to ash in his hands.
When we stepped out onto the courthouse steps, a swarm of reporters flashing cameras and shouting questions surrounded us. Microphones thrust forward from every direction.
“Mr. Moretti! Is the Moretti syndicate officially disbanding?”
“Mrs. Moretti, how do you feel about the verdict?”
Luca didn't blink. He raised his hand slightly, commanding absolute silence from the press corps with the same effortless authority that defined his reign, yet his posture was entirely different now—relaxed, resolute, and free.

“The Moretti family no longer operates in the shadows,” Luca announced clearly, his deep voice carrying over the crowd. “Starting today, our legacy is one of legitimacy, community investment, and justice. The past is behind us.”
He turned, wrapping a protective arm around his mother, and then pulled me close against his side, guiding us through the flashing cameras toward our waiting car.
