Chapter 6 - The Midnight Confession That Changed Everything

Days blurred into a whirlwind of quiet tension and hidden warfare inside the sprawling Moretti estate. While Luca systematically dismantled Michael’s secret faction across Chicago, neutralizing threats and consolidating his absolute authority over the syndicate, the mansion remained a heavily guarded sanctuary.
It was late Friday night, nearly midnight, when I finally managed to slip away to the mansion's vast underground library to fetch a specific medical journal Teresa had requested. The corridors were dimly lit, casting long, eerie shadows against the dark wood-paneled walls.
As I reached for a heavy leather-bound volume on the top shelf, a floorboard creaked behind me.
I froze. “Who’s there?”
“Relax, little bird,” a smooth, chillingly familiar voice echoed from the darkness.
I spun around. Standing near the doorway was not one of Luca’s trusted guards, but a man I recognized instantly from the syndicate meetings—Victor Vance, Michael’s primary financial adviser and second-in-command, who had somehow managed to evade capture during Luca's initial sweep.
My breath caught in my throat. I reached instinctively into my apron pocket where Luca’s encrypted panic button lay hidden.
Victor saw the movement and laughed coldly, stepping forward with alarming speed. Before I could pull the device out, he lunged across the space, grabbing my arm with a crushing grip and pinning me against the towering bookshelf.
“Ah-ah,” Victor hissed, pressing a cold, steel blade against my throat. “Don't even think about it, sweetheart. The guards are currently occupied on the opposite side of the estate.”
“What do you want?” I managed to choke out, fighting the rising panic clawing at my chest.
“I want what Michael left behind,” Victor whispered fiercely. “The financial ledgers. The offshore account numbers. Luca thinks he’s won, but he doesn't know the half of it. Michael was just a puppet. I’m the one who engineered the takeover of the Moretti fortune.”
Before I could answer, a heavy crash echoed from the double doors of the library.
The heavy oak doors were kicked open with earth-shattering force. There stood Luca, his black coat billowing behind him, holding a silenced pistol in his right hand. His face was a mask of pure, unadulterated fury—the face of a mafia king whose territory had just been violated.
“Let her go, Victor,” Luca’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it echoed with lethal promise through the cavernous room.
Victor’s hand trembled slightly as the blade pressed closer to my skin. “Stay back, Luca! One step closer, and I slit her throat right now!”
Luca didn't stop. He walked forward slowly, his dark eyes locked onto Victor with terrifying intensity. “You think taking a hostage saves you? You walked into a lion's den, Victor. And you just stepped on the wrong prey.”
“Drop your weapon!” Victor screamed, losing his nerve as Luca closed the distance.
“Drop her,” Luca commanded, raising his pistol with terrifying precision.
Before Victor could react, a deafening crack echoed through the library. A bullet pierced the chandelier directly above Victor’s head, sending a massive chunk of wood crashing down onto his shoulder, shattering his collarbone instantly.
Victor screamed in agony, releasing his grip on me and collapsing onto the persian rug.
I stumbled forward, gasping for air, but before I hit the floor, strong, muscular arms caught me, pulling me securely against a broad, familiar chest.
“Are you hurt?” Luca asked, his voice shaking slightly as his hands frantically checked me for injuries.

I looked up into his dark, worried eyes, feeling entirely safe for the first time in my life. “I’m... I’m okay. Thank you, Luca.”
Luca pulled me tighter against him, burying his face briefly in my hair before looking down at the groaning Victor. He signaled his guards to drag the traitor away, then looked back down at me with an expression that made my heart race faster than the gunshot ever could.
