Chapter 14 - The Gold Locket RestoredOn the evening before Easter, our family gathered in the private dining room of the estate for a quiet, intimate celebration.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the terrace.

The people gathered around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:

Frank Moretti, sitting tall and proud in his bespoke navy blazer, laughing as he shared stories of the old days with Daniel.

Toby, looking sharp and proud in his new tailored suit, sitting beside Dr. Harris.

Mrs. Carter, sitting as an honored guest alongside Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance.

And at the head of the table sat Luca Moretti, looking more relaxed and handsome than he had ever appeared in his life.

At eight o'clock, Luca tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

Luca reached into his breast pocket and produced the little gold locket that our mother had given me eleven years ago.

It had been mounted in a custom shadowbox crafted from reclaimed cypress from Pier 19, with a brass plaque reading:

THE LOCKET THAT BROUGHT US HOME — MARGARET CARTER MORETTI, 2001.

He turned his dark, soulful eyes toward me.

“Maria,” Luca said, his voice rich and deep with brotherly love.

“Yes, Luca?”

“Our mother asked you to keep this locket until you were safe,” Luca murmured, his voice thick with deep emotion. “You kept your word through eleven years of poverty and fear. You gave my family its soul back. You gave me my life back.”

He handed the shadowbox to me, and I held it against my chest with tears streaming down my cheeks.

“Thank you, Luca,” I whispered. “Our parents' souls are finally at rest.”

Luca turned to the table, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so vast, so profound, that words were entirely unnecessary.

He raised his glass of vintage port high into the air.

“To our family,” Luca declared, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal devotion. “Forever whole. Forever protected.”

“To our family!” they cheered together, clinking their glasses beneath the warm candlelight.
