Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Blood and BreadBy 3:00 AM, the rain had turned into a dense, freezing fog that choked the runways of Midway Airport.

A convoy of four black armored Suburbans breached the security gate of Hangar 4, tires hissing against the wet tarmac as they surrounded a private white Gulfstream IV idling on the apron.

Daniel and six elite tactical operators in black body armor moved with silent, lethal precision, disarming the four private guards on the gangway before they could draw their sidearms.

Luca walked up the folding stairs into the luxury cabin of the jet.

He wore an unbuttoned black wool overcoat, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his presence radiating an aura of such absolute, undisputed power that the two pilots immediately raised their hands and backed against the cockpit door.

Sitting in the plush leather club chair at the center of the cabin was Don Salvatore Bellini.

Sixty-eight years old. Silver hair impeccably slicked back, wearing an expensive bespoke camel-hair coat, his gold signet ring clicking nervously against a crystal tumbler of scotch.

Beside him sat two heavy aluminum flight cases packed with bearer bonds and forged Panamanian passports.

When Salvatore saw Luca, the tumbler slipped from his fingers, shattering against the carpet, dark liquor soaking into the wool.

“Luca...?” Salvatore stammered, his aristocratic drawl evaporating into a thin, breathless rasp. “What... what is the meaning of this intrusion? My flight has been cleared by federal air traffic control!”

Luca walked down the narrow aisle, stopping two feet from the older mobster.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the tarnished gold locket.

He held it by the broken chain, letting the oval pendant dangle inches from Salvatore’s nose.

Salvatore’s face lost every drop of color, turning the sickly shade of spoiled cream.

His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard.

“The... the locket,” Salvatore whispered, his voice trembling with ancient, cornered terror.

“My father’s locket, Salvatore,” Luca said softly. “The one you told the Commission was lost in the lake twenty-four years ago.”

Salvatore fell back against the leather seat, his chest heaving as if he were suffocating.

“Luca, listen to me! Pier 19 was an accident! Antonio pulled a gun! My men returned fire in self-defense!”

Luca reached into his vest, pulling out the unredacted 2002 police dispatch recording.

He pressed play on his phone.

Salvatore’s own voice echoed through the cabin, clear, cold, and calculating:

“Antonio took three rounds to the chest. Clear the dock. Throw his weapon into the slipway. And find the nurse... if Margaret Carter reaches the state police with that child, we are all dead.”

The recording clicked off.

Silence dropped over the cabin like a lead burial shroud.

Salvatore looked up at Luca’s dark, pitiless face.

He saw no hesitation. No anger. Only the cold, absolute finality of an empire being crushed beneath an iron heel.

“Where is Vanessa?” Salvatore whimpered, tears finally breaking through his arrogant facade.

“Vanessa is currently sitting in my sub-basement holding cellar,” Luca replied, each word dropping like an iron weight. “Wearing an orange jumpsuit, waiting for Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance to arrive with her federal kidnapping and conspiracy warrants.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Take Salvatore Bellini off this aircraft. Hand him over to the federal task force waiting at the hangar gate. Every port lease, every warehouse, and every vessel operating under the Bellini name is officially seized under the authority of the Moretti Family Trust.”

Salvatore wept openly, his hands clawing at the armrests as two armed guards hauled him up by his armpits, dragging him down the gangway into the freezing rain while his private jet sat dark and silent behind him.

Luca walked back down the stairs into the night air.

He looked up at the Chicago skyline glowing faintly in the distance, feeling the twenty-four-year-old shadow that had haunted his father’s name finally dissolve into the mist.

He climbed into the passenger seat of his vehicle, looking at Daniel.

“Take us back to Prairie Avenue,” Luca commanded softly. “I have a sister to introduce to the family.”
