Chapter 6 - THE FLASHBACK REVEAL

White light blinded the cavernous warehouse interior.

The deafening roar of sirens suddenly filled the night air.

Not police sirens—syndicate armored transport sirens.

Dozens of red and blue strobes painted the metal walls.

Graham stumbled backward against the catwalk railing.

His mouth dropped open in absolute disbelief.

"No... that's impossible," he stammered.

"I cut the communication lines!"

Evander stood frozen for a split second before lunging forward.

He scaled the iron ladder to the upper landing in seconds.

Graham raised his pistol, but Evander was too fast.

A powerful boot kicked the gun from Graham's grip.

It clattered down to the concrete floor far below.

Evander grabbed Graham by the lapels of his trench coat.

He slammed the older man against the corrugated metal wall.

"Where is my son?" Evander roared in his face.

Graham coughed, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

"Check... check the container," Graham wheezed, smiling evilly.

"The timer was real, Evander."

"Even if the explosives were a dud."

"The oxygen valve is sealed shut."

Evander released Graham and turned toward the ladder.

He slid down the rails, ignoring the friction burn on his palms.

He sprinted across the concrete toward shipping container B-12.

Daisy was already there, using a heavy iron crowbar.

She jammed it into the thick rubber seal of the heavy door.

"Help me push!" Daisy screamed over the wailing sirens.

Evander threw his massive weight against the steel door.

With a screech of tearing metal, the door popped open.

A rush of stale, cold air escaped the dark interior.

Inside sat a small boy with dark curls and tear-stained cheeks.

He wore a woolen sweater that Evander recognized instantly.

It was the sweater he had bought Leo for his sixth birthday.

"Daddy?" the boy whispered, his voice small and terrified.

Evander dropped to his knees in the dirt and mud.

Tears welled up in the feared Mafia Don's hard eyes.

He pulled his son into his arms with trembling hands.

"Leo... my boy," Evander choked out, burying his face in his hair.

"I've got you. You're safe now."

Daisy watched the reunion with tears in her own eyes.

She quickly checked the boy's pulse and breathing rate.

"He's dehydrated, but he's stable," Daisy reported.

"Just shock and lack of oxygen."

Evander looked up at Daisy, his expression softened by profound gratitude.

"You saved his life," Evander said, his voice thick with emotion.

"We saved him together," Daisy corrected gently.

Outside, Viktor and his men swarmed into the warehouse.

They dragged Graham down the metal stairs in handcuffs.

Graham spat blood onto the floor as he was hauled away.

"This isn't over, Evander!" Graham screamed into the rain.

"The syndicate council will vote you out by morning!"

Evander stood up slowly, holding Leo tightly in his arms.

He looked at Viktor with a cold, lethal glare.

"Take Graham to the deep-water docks."

"Feed him to the fishes."

"And as for Marceline?" Viktor asked quietly.

"Bring her to the courtyard," Evander commanded.

"She's going to watch her entire conspiracy burn to the ground."

They returned to the Cole estate as dawn began to break.

The storm had passed, leaving a pale, bruised sky behind.

Leo was resting safely in the mansion's private medical wing.

Daisy sat beside his bed, monitoring his intravenous fluids.

Evander walked in silently, closing the heavy oak door.

He looked down at his sleeping son with quiet reverence.

Then he turned his gaze toward the young housemaid.

"You are no longer a maid in this house, Daisy," Evander said.

"From this moment on, you are my chief advisor."

Daisy looked up, surprised by the sudden promotion.

"Mr. Cole, I only did what any decent person would do."

"Decency is a rare commodity in our world, Daisy," he replied.

"And loyalty is something money cannot buy."

"Tomorrow, the syndicate capos gather for an emergency vote."

"Marceline's allies think they can take control of the family."

May you like

"They are about to receive a very rude awakening."

[CLIFFHANGER: A gunshot echoed from the courtyard below, followed by Viktor's voice shouting through the intercom: "Boss, Marceline's personal lawyer just arrived with a court order signed by a federal judge!"]
