Chapter 10 - THE LIGHTHOUSE OF SHADOWS

The helicopter rotors chopped through the dense night air.
Blackwell Island loomed ahead like a jagged tooth in the dark.
The abandoned lighthouse stood tall against the churning river.
A single green light blinked erratically from its highest window.
Evander gripped his assault rifle tighter, his face illuminated by instrument lights.
Daisy sat across from him, checking her medical kit and a spare sidearm.
"If this is a trap," Daisy said calmly, "we only have one way out."
"There is no way out," Evander replied without looking at her.
"Either the Architect dies tonight, or we do."
The helicopter touched down on the rocky shore with a violent jolt.
Salt spray coated the windshield instantly.
Evander kicked open the cabin door and leaped onto the wet rocks.
Daisy followed closely behind, low to the ground.
They sprinted toward the heavy iron-studded wooden door of the lighthouse.
It was unlocked, swinging slightly in the coastal gale.
Inside, a spiral stone staircase wound upward into pitch darkness.
*Echoing footsteps.*
Someone was waiting for them at the top.
"Stay behind me," Evander whispered, raising his weapon.
They climbed the endless spiral stairs, their breathing heavy.
Reaching the top landing, they stepped into the massive lantern room.
Glass panels offered a panoramic view of the dark river below.
In the center of the room sat a single mahogany desk.
A man sat facing away from them, watching the New York skyline sparkle in the distance.
He wore an expensive dark wool coat.
On the desk sat a glowing laptop and a silver pocket watch.
"You're late, Evander," the man said smoothly.
He slowly swiveled the chair around.
It wasn't a stranger. It was Jonathan Cole—Evander's estranged uncle.
The man presumed dead in a helicopter crash ten years ago.
Evander froze, his weapon lowering an inch in pure shock.
"Uncle Jonathan?" Evander breathed.
"Impossible. You died in the Alps."
Jonathan smiled, a cold, calculating grin that mirrored Evander's own.
"Death is such a useful corporate strategy, my boy."
"How else do you shed old enemies and build a true empire?"
"You..." Evander gritted his teeth. "You are the Architect."
"Of course," Jonathan replied, standing up slowly.
"I built the syndicate before you were even born."
"You were just my replacement when I decided to retire to the shadows."
"But you grew too ambitious, Evander."
"You fell in love. You had a child."
"You allowed weakness to enter the bloodline."
"So I had to clean house."
Daisy stepped forward from behind Evander.
"And Marceline? And Graham?" she demanded.
"Pawns," Jonathan waved a dismissive hand.
"Greedy little children playing with matches."
"They thought they were overthrowing Evander."
"They were just testing his strength for me."
Evander raised his rifle directly at his uncle's chest.
"It ends tonight, Jonathan."
Jonathan didn't flinch. He simply pointed toward the glowing laptop.
"If you pull that trigger, the encryption key self-destructs."
"Every bank account, every asset, every safehouse the Cole family owns..."
"Will be broadcast to the federal government."
"You'll be penniless fugitives hunted by the entire world."
Evander's finger tightened on the trigger.
May you like
The silence in the lantern room was deafening.
[CLIFFHANGER: Daisy suddenly lunged forward, smashing her heavy medical flashlight across the laptop screen just as Jonathan reached for the enter key.]
