Chapter 9 - THE TRUE MASTERMIND

The master bedroom was bathed in golden afternoon sunlight.

Dust motes danced in the air above the king-sized bed.

Evander punched the digital combination into the wall safe.

The heavy steel door swung open with a soft mechanical sigh.

Inside sat stacks of bearer bonds, old passports, and a single black envelope.

Evander pulled the envelope out slowly.

No return address. Only a red wax seal bearing an unfamiliar crest.

He ripped the wax seal open with his thumb.

Inside was a single handwritten note on expensive stationery.

*“The syndicate was never yours to keep, Evander.”*

*“I gave you the crown. And I can take it away with a single keystroke.”*

*— Signed, The Architect.*

Daisy stood by the open window, looking out over the repaired courtyard.

"The Architect?" Daisy mused aloud.

"I've never heard that name mentioned in syndicate circles."

"Because it's a ghost story," Evander replied, his voice strained.

"An urban legend older than my father's reign."

"They said the Architect controlled the entire eastern seaboard from the shadows."

"Manipulating every Don, every war, every truce."

Suddenly, the television screen mounted on the wall flickered on.

Static hissed for three seconds before clearing into a crisp video feed.

A man wearing a silver Venetian mask sat in a leather armchair.

His voice was modulated, deep and metallic.

"Good afternoon, Evander," the masked man greeted smoothly.

"I hope you enjoyed the fireworks this morning."

Evander stepped closer to the screen, his fists clenched.

"Show your face, coward!" Evander shouted.

The man in the mask chuckled softly.

"Names and faces are for mortals, Evander."

"You were merely a pawn placed on the board to stabilize New York."

"Marceline was my investment."

"Graham was my cleaner."

"And your son's staged death?"

"A necessary lesson in absolute obedience."

Evander's breath hitched in his throat.

"You... you orchestrated Leo's kidnapping?"

"Of course," the Architect replied calmly.

"A Don with a family is a Don with a weakness."

"And weakness cannot be tolerated in our organization."

"However," the masked man continued, leaning forward.

"You proved surprisingly resilient."

"You survived the banquet, the federal trap, and the Russian assault."

"Which brings us to our final arrangement."

"What arrangement?" Evander demanded.

"You surrender your entire empire by midnight tonight."

"Or the antidote keeping your son alive in the medical wing..."

"Will slowly stop working."

Evander's blood ran ice cold in his veins.

He spun around and sprinted out of the master bedroom.

"Daisy, come on!" he yelled over his shoulder.

They raced down the corridors toward the private medical wing.

Bursting through the heavy double doors, they rushed to Leo's bedside.

The young boy was sleeping peacefully, his chest rising and falling.

Daisy immediately checked the intravenous monitor.

The fluid drip was pulsing normally.

"He's stable," Daisy gasped, wiping sweat from her brow.

"The toxin screen is clean."

Evander stared at the monitor, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"It was a bluff," Evander whispered.

"A psychological trap to make us panic."

"No," Daisy said, her eyes widening as she examined the IV bag.

"Look at the serial number on the fluid pouch."

"It's not saline. It's a localized neuro-inhibitor."

"If we hadn't checked immediately..."

"It would have activated in exactly ten minutes," a voice echoed from the doorway.

Viktor stood there, holding a smoking laptop.

"I traced the video feed signal," Viktor announced.

"It originated from the abandoned lighthouse on Blackwell Island."

Evander stood up slowly, a terrifying darkness settling over his features.

"Get the chopper ready," Evander commanded.

May you like

"We're going fishing."

[CLIFFHANGER: As the helicopter lifts off the pad, the dashboard monitors suddenly go black, and a countdown timer flashes across every screen: 05:00 to total system wipe.]
