Chapter 3 - The Cold Ash of Room 12Elena scrambled backward on her knees, pressing her hands against her mouth, her eyes wide with shock.

“You... you can speak?” she breathed.
Silvio did not answer with words.
The immense effort of forcing that single syllable through his ruined throat had coated his temples in a light sheen of sweat, but his dark eyes remained pinned to hers with absolute, terrifying clarity.
Slowly, deliberately, his right hand reached into the inner lining of his woolen sweater.
He drew out a heavy, tarnished brass spindle—an antique key forged in the shape of a ship's anchor, stamped with three Roman numerals:
I - IX - VIII.
The private vault key to the master treasury beneath the Santoro drydock terminal in Atlantic City.
He pressed the heavy metal into Elena’s trembling palm, closing her fingers tightly around the cold brass.
He leaned forward, his voice a harsh, dry whisper that carried the density of iron:
“Ring... the line.”
Elena looked toward the wall behind the door.
Concealed behind a faded tapestry was an ancient, mechanical brass pull-lever—an emergency call wire that ran directly through the subterranean conduit into the main mansion’s library, connected to a heavy naval warning bell.
A bell that had remained silent for seven years.
A bell that signaled only one message to every made man sworn to the Santoro bloodline:
The Sovereign is under attack.
Elena looked down at the brass spindle in her hand. She felt the fresh blood trickling from her split lip, and she thought of her unborn daughter.
She stood up.

Her back was straight, her chin lifted, and all fear vanished from her heart.
She walked to the wall, pulled back the tapestry, gripped the heavy brass lever with both hands, and pulled downward with all her weight.
