Chapter 7 - A Scent of Sweet Almond and Scorched PineMarco Santoro slowly rose to his feet.

He was six feet two inches of lethal, ruthless power—a man who had buried rival bosses and broken federal grand juries without blinking.

Yet as he looked at Elena, standing wrapped in Silvio’s thermal blanket with the brass anchor resting against her smock, his eyes held no cruelty, no arrogance, and no pride.

They held an ocean of breathtaking, reverent awe.

He took two deliberate steps forward, stopping inches from where she stood.

He did not look at her worn clothes. He did not look at her canvas shoes.

He took off his bespoke cashmere overcoat and draped it with infinite care around her trembling, pregnant shoulders, pulling the heavy, warm fabric securely across her chest.

His large, calloused hand rose to her cheek, his thumb gently smoothing away the dried blood from Henderson’s slap.

“Did he strike you, Elena?” Marco asked, his baritone rough with barely contained slaughter.

“Yes, sir,” Elena whispered, fresh tears spilling over her lashes. “He struck me because I wouldn't clear the snow from the loading ramp.”

Marco slowly turned his head to Frank.

“Tell the men in the meat locker to break Henderson’s right wrist before the prosecutors arrive.”

“Done, boss,” Frank answered with an iron nod.

Marco turned back to Elena.

Without a second thought, the most feared mob boss on the Atlantic coast dropped onto both knees on the floorboards before her, taking her small, rough right hand into both of his massive, warm palms.

He reached into his waistcoat pocket and produced an antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.

He opened the lid.

Inside sat an exquisite, hand-crafted ring of solid platinum, featuring a flawless, seven-carat cushion-cut royal blue sapphire cradled by two delicate sea-dragons carved from white gold—the historic sovereign ring of Donna Maria Santoro, which had been locked in the family vault for twenty years.

“Elena Alvarez,” Marco began, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook his entire being.

“Three months ago, you entered this compound wearing an oversized maid’s smock, carrying another man’s debt and another man’s child, fighting through exhaustion and hunger to survive without ever surrendering the pure gold of your dignity.”

He looked up into her brown eyes, his gaze steady and eternal.

“You walked into a dark room and gave my father his life back. You protected him when sixty men with guns looked at their ledgers. You brought honor back to this house, and you taught me what true strength really means.”

He lifted the sapphire ring, holding it poised before her trembling finger.

“Elena Alvarez, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my partner, and the true Donna of my life, my home, and my fleet? Will you let me be a father to little Isabella, to give her a name that no man on this earth will ever dare to challenge?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over Elena’s lashes, hot against her cheeks.

“Yes,” she choked out through her laughter, throwing her arms around his neck as he rose from the floor. “Yes, Marco! A thousand times yes!”

Marco swept her up into his arms, lifting her off the floorboards, holding her tight against his solid, broad chest before bringing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed their destiny forever beneath the firelight.

He slid the sapphire ring onto her finger.

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beside the brass anchor on her chest.

Behind them, Don Silvio Santoro stood tall on his own two feet, resting his hand on the mantle of the fireplace, a rare, radiant smile breaking across his weathered face as he watched his son kiss the angel of Room 12.
