Chapter 10 - Bloodlines of the Pine BarrensTwo weeks later, on a crisp, sunlit Saturday afternoon, Marco, Silvio, and Elena brought fresh white calla lilies to the historic cemetery on the ridge overlooking the Atlantic coast.

The cemetery was quiet, peaceful, and bathed in golden autumn light that filtered through the ancient maritime pines.
They walked down a secluded gravel path until they reached a beautiful, shaded plot surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas and fragrant rosemary bushes.
Standing beneath a towering granite cross was the headstone of Marco’s mother, Donna Maria Santoro:
Maria Santoro (1952–2010) — The Heart of the Coast, A Mother of Honor.
Fresh bouquets of white calla lilies, red roses, and fragrant sweet basil rested at the base of the stone.
Don Silvio knelt beside his late wife’s headstone, resting his hand on the carved granite, his dark eyes bright with tears of profound, eternal peace.
“We brought the truth home, Maria,” Silvio whispered softly. “The house is clean. Marco has an angel at his side. Our bloodline is secure forever.”
Marco stepped forward, kneeling beside his father on the gravel path, his hand resting respectfully on the stone.
“Your sapphire is home, Mother,” Marco murmured, his deep baritone thick with resonant emotion. “The woman who saved Father wears it today. In this house, your honor will never be forgotten.”
Elena knelt beside them, placing the antique brass spindle—its anchor polished until it shone like mirror glass in the autumn sun—beside the lilies on the stone.
“Thank you, Donna Maria,” Elena murmured softly. “We will protect the family forever.”
Marco stood up, pulling Elena into his arms, wrapping his heavy cashmere overcoat around her shoulders, shielding her and little Isabella from the ocean wind.

He reached into his pocket and produced an antique silver pocket watch that had belonged to his grandfather, sliding the chain into Elena’s palm.
“Our family is whole, Elena. The cold will never touch us again.”
