Chapter 8 - The Interrogation in the VaultBy 4:00 AM, the boardroom had been cleared, and the forty syndicate capos had signed emergency treaties transferring sixty million dollars in Sterling banking assets into the Vance Family Trust.

Down in the subterranean records vault where Nora had knelt hours earlier, the broken glass had been swept away, the water dried, and the damp air replaced by the warm roar of two commercial space heaters.
Nathaniel and Nora sat together at the large sorting table, reviewing the original hand-drawn route charts that Arthur Vance had drafted forty years ago.
Nora wore a soft cream wool sweater and dark trousers, her left hand resting gently over her sleeping baby, her eyes bright with a peaceful, radiant warmth.
Nathaniel held the gold pocket watch in his hand, his thumb tracing the engraved three-masted schooner.
“Our father would be proud of you, Julianna,” Nathaniel murmured softly. “You survived on the streets of South Boston, you fought through grief, and you protected his watch through fifteen years of silence.”
“He was with me, Nathaniel,” Nora smiled, leaning her head against her brother’s broad shoulder. “Every time the wind blew off the water, I felt him telling me to keep walking.”
Gideon entered the vault, carrying a leather portfolio bearing the golden seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
“The federal warrants have been served, Don Nathaniel,” Gideon reported with a satisfied nod. “Charles Sterling and his daughter are remanded without bail to the federal detention center in Rhode Island. The Sterling bank accounts have been frozen by court decree.”
He set the portfolio before Nora.
“And this is the official decree from the probate court, Miss Vance. Restoring your birth name, your legal lineage, and transferring fifty percent of the Vance Maritime Corporation into your name.”
Nora looked down at the parchment, her fingers tracing the words: Julianna Maria Vance.
Tears of pure, unadulterated relief spilled down her cheeks.
“I’m finally home, Nathaniel,” she whispered.

Nathaniel wrapped his strong arm around her, kissing her temple with fierce, eternal devotion.
“You’re home, Julianna. And the Vance family will never be broken again.”
