Chapter 13 - Harrington’s Final Defense

Three days later, the grand council chamber at the Blackwood estate convened for the final, historic ratification of the new syndicate charter.

The ebony table was surrounded by all seven council elders, dressed in formal syndicate attire. Seated at the head of the table, dressed in an emerald-green silk dress that honored my mother’s favorite color, was me—Maya Blackwood-Stone.

Beside me sat Damian, dressed in his immaculate bespoke suit, his hand resting over mine upon the dark wood.

Standing behind my chair, dressed in his finest antique tailcoat with gleaming silver buttons, was Thomas Harrington.

Elder Vance rose from his seat, holding a massive leather-bound tome containing the centuries-old laws of our organization.

“Before this council,” Vance announced, his deep voice carrying total reverence, “stands the verified lineage of Arthur Blackwood. Under the evidence presented by Chief Steward Thomas Harrington, the Thorne Syndicate has been declared extinct under council law. All holdings, territories, and voting rights are hereby transferred permanently to Maya Blackwood-Stone and Damian Blackwood.”

Vance picked up the traditional silver quill and placed it before me. “Sign the charter, Miss Blackwood. Claim your seat.”

I looked at Damian, who gave me a gentle, reassuring nod. I picked up the silver quill, dipped it into the black ink, and signed my name in clear, flowing script across the parchment: *Maya Blackwood-Stone.*

Damian took the quill and signed his name beside mine: *Damian Blackwood.*

The council elders stood as one, bowing their heads in deep, unanimous respect.

“Long live the House of Blackwood,” they declared in unison.

When the council members had dispersed, leaving only Damian, Harrington, and me in the great room, Harrington stepped forward and produced a small, velvet-lined mahogany box from his coat pocket.

“There is one final matter of estate protocol that must be addressed, Master Damian,” Harrington said, his eyes shining with emotion.

Damian smiled warmly. “What is it, Thomas?”

Harrington opened the box, revealing a breathtaking heirloom ring featuring a flawless, cushion-cut blue diamond surrounded by a halo of micro-pave platinum—the legendary Blackwood ancestral ring, worn by every true mistress of the house for four generations.

“Arthur gave this to me forty-eight hours before he boarded that fateful flight to London,” Harrington explained, his voice thick with tears. “He told me: *‘Thomas, when my son finds a woman who possesses the courage of a warrior and the heart of a protector, place this ring in his hand.’*”

Harrington presented the box to Damian.

Damian took the ring, turned toward me, and knelt down on one knee upon the Persian rug of the council chamber.

The powerful, feared sovereign of the underworld looked up at me with tears shining in his dark eyes, his heart laid completely bare.

“Maya,” Damian whispered, taking my trembling left hand into his. “You walked into my life when it was surrounded by vipers and shadows. You stood up for honor when everyone else was selling their souls. You saved my life, you healed my family’s legacy, and you gave this house a soul again.”

He slid the stunning blue diamond onto my finger, fitting perfectly against my skin.

“Will you marry me, Maya? Not for an alliance. Not for a corporate merger. But because I love you with everything that I am, and I want to spend the rest of my life honoring you as my wife and the true mistress of Blackwood Hall?”

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down my cheeks. I knelt down beside him, throwing my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest.

“Yes, Damian,” I sobbed happily. “Yes, a thousand times yes!”

Damian pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss as Harrington stood beside us, dabbing his eyes with a spotless white handkerchief, smiling with the profound peace of a man whose lifelong mission had finally been triumphantly completed.
