Chapter 10 - Sarah’s Hidden Key

By noon, Luca returned to the Gold Coast mansion carrying a small, vintage steel lockbox retrieved from the 22nd Street office.
Lily and I were sitting in the bright, glass-walled conservatory at the back of the house. The winter sunlight flooded the room, warming the terracotta tiles and the lush green ferns hanging from the vaulted glass ceiling.
On the low wicker table between us sat a brand-new lemon cake.
We had spent the entire morning baking it together. The edges were straight this time. The pale yellow frosting was whipped into smooth, glossy peaks, decorated with fresh candied lemon slices and small white sugar blossoms that Lily had carefully arranged with a pair of silver tweezers.
Written neatly across the top in delicate yellow script were three words:
WELCOME HOME, DAD.
When Luca entered the conservatory, his eyes instantly landed on the cake.
A look of profound, breathtaking peace passed over his face. He set the steel lockbox on a side table and walked over to us, dropping to his knees between Lily’s wicker chair and mine.
“Look, Daddy!” Lily cheered, clapping her hands. “Claire helped me make the edges straight! And the frosting didn't slide off!”
Luca wrapped his arms around his daughter, burying his face in her hair. “It’s the most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen in my life, baby.”
“Better than the fancy chocolate ones?” she asked playfully.
“A thousand times better,” Luca murmured, kissing her cheek.
He looked up at me, his eyes shining with unshed emotion. “Thank you, Claire.”
“She did most of the work,” I smiled, blushing slightly. “I just operated the oven dials.”
Luca stood up and brought the vintage steel lockbox to the table. He pulled out the brass key from his pocket—the one found in the broken recipe box.
“What’s that, Daddy?” Lily asked curiously.
“Something your mother left for us,” Luca said softly.
He inserted the key and turned the lock. The lid lifted with a soft metallic click.
Inside lay no financial ledgers. No lists of enemies. No evidence of corruption.
Inside was a velvet jeweler’s pouch containing Sarah’s original platinum wedding band, an envelope addressed to Luca & Lily, and an antique silver locket containing a tiny photograph of Luca holding Lily when she was just three hours old in the hospital room.
Luca opened the envelope with steady fingers. Inside was a single letter written on Sarah’s familiar cream-colored stationery.
My beloved Luca,
If you are reading this, it means my battle is over, and you are carrying the weight of our world alone. I know how heavy that armor feels, my love. I know how easy it is to let this life turn your heart into stone to protect our daughter.
Promise me one thing: do not let grief make you cold. Do not choose a partner out of tactical convenience or syndicate politics. Lily needs a home filled with warmth, not an alliance built on fear.
Find a woman who sees our daughter’s heart. Find someone who chooses kindness when cruelty is easier. When you find her, give her this ring, and know that wherever I am, I am smiling on you both.
Forever yours,
Sarah.
Tears welled in Luca’s eyes, rolling silently down his scarred cheeks.
Lily reached out with her small hands and gently wiped the tears away, just as her father had done for her so many times before.
“Don’t cry, Daddy,” Lily whispered softly. “Mom is happy now.”
May you like
Luca nodded, pulling his daughter close against his chest. “Yes, baby. She is.”
