Chapter 14 - The Recipe Box Returned

Six months later.
Spring had finally arrived in Chicago. The ice had melted from Lake Michigan, replaced by sparkling turquoise waves beneath a brilliant blue sky. The tulip gardens surrounding the Moretti estate burst into vivid blooms of yellow, crimson, and white.
In the grand banquet hall of the mansion, another gathering was taking place.
There were no corrupt councilmen. No calculating syndicate underbosses. No armed guards watching from the shadows of the velvet drapes.
Around the long mahogany table sat the people who truly mattered:
My mother, dressed in a beautiful floral silk dress, laughing with Maria and the senior household staff.
Matteo, sitting comfortably in a crisp suit, sharing stories with the foundation’s legal directors.
Lily, wearing a bright yellow sundress, sitting proudly at the center of the table, her dark hair woven with fresh daisies.
And at the head of the table sat Luca, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.
I walked into the dining room carrying a large white ceramic platter.
On the platter sat a magnificent, multi-tiered lemon cake.
The frosting was glossy and smooth. The tiers were straight and elegant. But right on top, perched beside fresh candied lemon slices, sat a small, lovingly crafted miniature cake that tilted just slightly to the left—a tribute to the crooked dessert that had saved this family from ruin.
Written across the base in delicate yellow icing were the words:
TO OUR FAMILY. WITH LOVE.
Lily jumped up from her chair with a joyous squeal. “The lemon cake!”
The entire room erupted into warm, delighted laughter and applause.
Luca stood up, his eyes locked onto mine as I set the cake down in front of him.
He picked up a silver fork, cut a generous slice from the crooked top tier, and took a bite.
He closed his eyes, savoring the bright, sweet lemon flavor that carried the history, the courage, and the rebirth of his home.
When he opened his eyes, he looked directly at Lily, then at me.
“It’s perfection,” Luca announced, his voice thick with deep, resonant warmth.
Lily clapped her hands. “Mom’s recipe is the best in the whole world!”
“It is, baby,” Luca agreed, kissing the top of his daughter’s head.
Then, Luca reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out an antique velvet box.
The room fell into an eager, expectant hush.
He walked around the table until he stood directly in front of me.

He dropped onto one knee on the polished marble floor.
