Chapter 13 - Cleaning House

The following two weeks were a whirlwind of revitalization and light.

Under my new role, we opened the foundation’s main office in a restored brownstone in Lincoln Park. My first priority was funding after-school culinary and arts programs for underprivileged children across Chicago—programs that allowed kids like Lily to explore their creativity without fear.

At home in Bridgeport, my mother’s drafty house received a brand-new, top-of-the-line heating system, fully paid for by a contractor Luca personally dispatched. When my mother called me weeping with gratitude, I had to choke back my own tears.

“He’s a good man, Claire,” my mother told me through the phone. “A man who looks after the people who take care of his child is a man with a true heart.”

“He is, Mom,” I whispered. “He really is.”

One Saturday evening, the mansion was peaceful and quiet.

Lily was upstairs in the library reading her favorite adventure novels. Luca had spent the afternoon in his study finishing international shipping contracts that were now entirely legitimate and federally certified.

I walked into the kitchen to prepare an evening pot of chamomile tea.

The kitchen, once cold and sterile under Vanessa’s strict aesthetic rules, now smelled of cinnamon, vanilla, and fresh lemons. Sarah’s antique recipe box sat proudly on the center island, cleaned, polished, and restored to its rightful place of honor.

Footsteps echoed softly against the terracotta tile floor.

I turned around.

Luca stood in the doorway, leaning against the jamb, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, watching me with that deep, magnetic gaze that never failed to make my heart flutter.

“Working late, Madame Director?” he teased softly.

“Just making tea, Mr. Chairman,” I replied with a smile.

He crossed the room with slow, quiet strides until he was standing less than a foot away from me. The warmth radiating from his broad chest was intoxicating.

“Lily fell asleep,” Luca murmured, his voice dropping into a tender, intimate register. “With a smile on her face.”

“She’s happy, Luca. She feels safe again.”

“She isn't the only one,” Luca said softly.

He reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently cupping the side of my face. His thumb stroked my cheekbone with breathtaking tenderness.

“I spent five years living in a fortress, Claire,” Luca whispered, searching my eyes. “Surrounded by guards, ledgers, and enemies. I thought my job was just to survive long enough to see Lily grow up.”

My breath trembled. “And now?”

“And now I want to live,” Luca said. “With you.”

He leaned down, his lips brushing against mine in a gentle, questioning contact that sent a jolt of pure electricity through my entire being.

I didn't pull away. I raised my hands, resting them against the solid warmth of his chest, and leaned into the kiss.

The kiss deepened—rich, tender, and full of a fierce, protective passion that wiped away every lingering shadow of the past five years.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his dark eyes were blazing with unmistakable devotion.

“Stay with us, Claire,” he whispered against my lips. “Not as an employee. As the woman who holds my heart.”

May you like

“I’m not going anywhere, Luca,” I whispered back, my heart swelling with an emotion so vast it felt like flying. “I’m right here.”
