Chapter 13 - Cleaning House in ChicagoOn the evening before our wedding, Matteo and I hosted an intimate family dinner in the private salon on the second floor of the compound.

The table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh white hydrangeas and fragrant sprigs of rosemary.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the terrace.

The people gathered around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:

Francesco Rossi, sitting tall, healthy, and proud at the head of the table, his gold-topped cane resting beside his chair.

My sister Sarah, looking sharp and proud in her new tailored suit.

Marco Santori and Dr. Aris, sitting as honored guests alongside senior labor leaders from the docks.

And Matteo, sitting beside me, his arm resting comfortably around my shoulders, while little Lily slept peacefully in her white bassinet beside the hearth.

At eight o'clock, Francesco tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

The old patriarch reached into his breast pocket and produced the folded, creased ultrasound scan that I had placed in his paralyzed hand six months ago in cell 3C.

It had been mounted in an antique silver frame engraved with the words:

THE HEARTBEAT THAT WOKE THE DON — LILY ROSSI, 2026.

He turned his dark eyes toward me, his voice rich and deep with paternal love.

“Leah,” Francesco said softly.

“Yes, Father?”

“When you walked into that cold cellar carrying a tin of warm polenta,” the old man said, his voice trembling with emotion, “you didn't know I was a Don. You didn't know I had millions in offshore vaults. You only knew an old man was freezing in the dark.”

He reached across the table, his weathered hand closing over mine, pressing the framed sonogram into my palm.

“You gave my grandson his grandfather back. You gave my house its soul back. And tomorrow, you become the true Donna of this empire.”

Tears of pure, overwhelming gratitude spilled over my lashes, hot against my cheeks.

“Thank you, Father,” I whispered, leaning across the table to press a warm, loving kiss against his cheek.

Matteo looked at his grandfather, then looked at me, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so vast, so profound, that words were entirely unnecessary.

He raised his glass of Barolo high into the air.

“To our family,” Matteo declared, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal devotion. “Forever whole. Forever protected.”

“To our family!” we cheered together, clinking our glasses beneath the warm candlelight.
