Chapter 14 - The Heartbeat in the Rose GardenThe wedding day arrived in a blaze of brilliant, perfect summer sunshine.

The outdoor rose garden of the Rossi compound had been transformed into an ethereal wonderland of white orchids, fragrant climbing roses, and thousands of twinkling crystal lanterns.

Over six hundred guests had gathered beneath the vast, open Midwestern sky:

Nurses, doctors, and therapists from Northwestern sitting alongside dockworkers, warehouse handlers, and transit union members from across Chicago and Montreal.

The senior capos of the Midwest Syndicate, wearing clean bespoke tuxedos, sat respectfully beside childhood educators, legal advocates, and community organizers.

At the front of the stone aisle, standing proudly on his own two feet without his cane, was Don Francesco Rossi.

Beside him stood Marco Santori as master of ceremonies, looking sharp and proud in his tailored tuxedo.

At the altar, constructed from hand-hewn limestone and white climbing roses, stood Matteo Rossi.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo with a single white calla lily pinned to his lapel, his gray eyes fixed on the entrance archway with undisguised, radiant adoration.

The string quartet swelled into a majestic, triumphant bridal march.

The heavy wrought-iron gates swung open.

I walked down the petal-strewn aisle on the arm of my sister Sarah, who walked tall, proud, and steady, tears of unbridled joy shining in her eyes.

My gown was a custom masterpiece of French lace and flowing ivory silk that trailed behind me like sea foam across the stone path. Around my neck rested Donna Isabella’s sapphire necklace, and on my finger sparkled the six-carat sapphire and platinum ring.

In the front row, Dr. Aris held baby Lily, who was dressed in a miniature ivory lace dress, cooing happily as she watched her mother approach.

When I reached the altar, Matteo stepped forward and took my hand.

His touch was warm, solid, and filled with a reverence that took my breath away.

He lifted my veil with fingers that trembled faintly with overwhelming emotion.

“You take my breath away, Leah,” he whispered, his voice rich and deep with love.

“You’re stuck with me forever now, Don Rossi,” I whispered back, my eyes dancing with radiant joy.

“Best contract I ever negotiated,” he replied with that rare, breathtaking smile of his.

The priest raised his hands in blessing over us and the congregation watching with tears of pure happiness.

“We are gathered here today to witness the union of two souls whose courage defeated the darkness, and whose truth built a sanctuary of life, honor, and healing for an entire empire.”

We exchanged our sacred vows—words forged not from syndicate treaties, but from the depths of two hearts that had survived the storm and found peace in each other’s arms.

Matteo slid a solid platinum band onto my finger beside the sapphire ring.

“With this ring, Leah,” Matteo vowed, his deep baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the garden, “I give you my life, my protection, my empire, and my heart. For as long as my heart beats, you will be my shelter, my queen, and my light. No shadow will ever touch your life, and no hand will ever harm what belongs to me.”

I placed his platinum band onto his finger, looking straight into his dark, soulful eyes with complete, fearless love.

“With this ring, Matteo, I promise to walk beside you in every battle, to heal you when you hurt, and to love you, your grandfather, and our daughter fiercely and completely until our final breath.”

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest declared with a joyful smile. “You may kiss the bride.”

Matteo wrapped his strong arms around my waist, dipping me slightly as his lips met mine in a passionate, breathtaking kiss that brought the entire six hundred guests to their feet in thunderous, joyous applause.

Francesco raised his arms into the air with a booming cheer of triumph, while Sarah wiped tears of joy from her cheeks.
