Chapter 9 - The Debt Paid in FullThree days later, the news of the Vance family’s total collapse dominated the front pages of every newspaper across the United States and Canada.

The headline across the Chicago Tribune blared in massive black letters:

MONTREAL PHARMACEUTICAL CARTEL CRUMBLED: ARTHUR AND VICTORIA VANCE INDICTED IN HISTORIC 6-YEAR POISONING CONSPIRACY.

Arthur Vance was formally sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole at the federal penitentiary in ADX Florence, Colorado.

Victoria Vance was sentenced to thirty-eight years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and international drug trafficking.

Her designer wardrobes, her multi-million-dollar trust funds, and her family’s private luxury penthouses were completely liquidated by federal court decree, with seventy-five percent of the recovered capital transferred directly into the newly chartered Lily Miller Pediatric Foundation.

Down in Gary, Indiana, the loan-shark crew that had hunted me across the state was completely dismantled.

Federal agents, acting on forensic evidence provided by Matteo’s logistics team, raided their headquarters on 5th Avenue, arresting twelve enforcers and seizing three million dollars in illicit cash.

Derek Cole, the gambler who had left me to face the debt alone, was confirmed to have perished months earlier in a gang dispute, his debts formally expunged from all public and private registries.

The nightmare that had haunted my pregnancy had vanished into thin air.

I was free.

Whole.

And protected by an army that answered to the man who held my heart.

One sunny afternoon in late January, Matteo took Francesco and me to the newly renovated east wing of the Chicago compound.

The cold, sterile rooms that Victoria had once occupied had been completely gutted and transformed.

The walls were painted in warm cream and soft blush pink, with heated Brazilian cherry floors and panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.

At the center of the wing was a state-of-the-art nursery, featuring a hand-carved white oak crib draped in soft linen, a comfortable rocking chair by a crackling fireplace, and shelves filled with plush stuffed animals and classical children's books.

Francesco walked into the nursery leaning on his gold-topped cane, running his weathered hand over the smooth wood of the crib.

“My great-granddaughter will sleep like an angel in here, Matteo,” the old Don smiled, his eyes misting with joy.

“She will sleep in peace, Grandpa,” Matteo replied softly, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his solid, warm chest.

I rested my head against his shoulder, feeling Lily give a soft, content kick beneath my gown.

“Thank you, Matteo,” I whispered, looking up into his handsome, rugged face. “For building a paradise out of our storm.”

May you like

Matteo kissed my forehead, his gray eyes shining with an ocean of fierce, eternal devotion.

“You built the paradise, Leah. We just put the roof on.”
