Chapter 12 - A Sanctuary in the East Wing

The following month was a whirlwind of joyous preparation and complete renewal.

Under my direction, the newly chartered Lily Vance Foundation established a fifty-million-dollar permanent endowment dedicated to providing safe housing, legal defense, and comprehensive medical care for pregnant women and young mothers escaping domestic violence and loan-shark extortion across the Northeast.

The domestic staff at the mountain fortress were given permanent employment contracts with full pension benefits, union wages, and comprehensive healthcare coverage under the newly established Caruso Trust.

Room 4B—the freezing attic room where Salvatore had spent five years in chemical paralysis—was completely gutted.

The rusted wheelchair, the coarse horse blankets, and the cold hearth were removed and replaced with a bright, sunlit art studio and private chapel dedicated to Saint Jude, where fresh white lilies bloomed on the altar every morning.

Mrs. Carter was promoted to Executive Director of Estate Operations, ensuring that every domestic worker was treated with dignity, respect, and fair wages.

One sunny Saturday morning, I walked into the grand kitchen.

The air was warm, filled with the rich aromas of simmering cinnamon cider, roasting peaches, and fresh sourdough bread.

My brother had arrived from Albany to visit, sitting at the breakfast island in his clean college sweater, drinking coffee and laughing heartily with Salvatore as the old Don showed him how to braid sweet Italian bread.

“Good morning, Donna Nora,” my brother teased with a playful wink as I walked in carrying baby Lily.

“Stop calling me that, Toby,” I laughed, swatting his shoulder with a linen towel before kissing Salvatore’s cheek. “You’re studying for your accounting midterms; you outrank everyone in math.”

“Nobody outranks the woman who commands eighty soldiers with a single glance,” Toby grinned, taking a bite of warm pastry.

Footsteps echoed softly from the hallway.

Dante walked into the kitchen, wearing a casual charcoal cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and breathtakingly handsome.

He walked straight to where I was standing, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me gently against his solid, warm chest.

He buried his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

“Vanilla, clean rain, and baby powder,” he murmured against my skin, sending a delicious shiver down my spine. “The only scent I ever want to wake up to.”

He reached out with his large, scarred hand, gently tickling Lily’s chin as the baby let out a delighted gurgle.

“The wedding invitations were mailed this morning, Nora,” Dante whispered against my cheek.

“Six hundred guests,” I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder. “And this time, your father is standing at the altar as your best man.”

Salvatore chuckled from the island, nodding with immense satisfaction.

“And I’ll be dancing the tarantella, son. Not sitting in a rusted chair.”

May you like

Laughter rippled through the kitchen, warm, bright, and completely devoid of shadows.
