Chapter 8 - Stripped of Fur and Gold

By noon, the emergency council in the great hall had concluded with absolute, historic finality.

Under the ancient laws of the Five Families, an organization that attempted to assassinate a founding Don through chemical poisoning was stripped of all charters, assets, and commercial territory.

The Montreal syndicate’s forty deep-water container berths, their international trucking routes, and their three billion dollars in real estate holdings were formally absorbed into the Caruso Family Trust.

The fifty syndicate commanders had signed the revised treaties without a single dissent, raising their glasses of vintage Barolo in a thunderous toast to Don Salvatore’s miraculous return.

In the private sunroom on the second floor of the fortress, a warm fire crackled in the hearth, driving away the mountain chill.

I sat on the velvet sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere shawl, holding a warm cup of herbal tea that Mrs. Carter had prepared for me.

Little Lily gave a strong, rhythmic flutter against my ribs, as if celebrating the newfound peace in her mother’s chest.

Salvatore sat in an armchair beside me, his reading glasses perched on his nose as he reviewed the newly drafted charter for the family’s charitable foundations.

The heavy doors opened softly.

Dante walked in.

He had removed his suit jacket, rolling up the sleeves of his black dress shirt to his forearms. He carried a small, antique velvet jeweler’s box lined with white silk.

He stopped in front of the sofa, looking down at me with an expression of profound, breathtaking gentleness that completely erased the terrifying mob Don who had dismantled an empire two hours earlier.

“How are you feeling, Nora?” he asked softly, sitting on the ottoman opposite me.

“I feel like I'm dreaming, Dante,” I admitted honestly, a faint smile touching my lips. “Twenty-four hours ago, I was eating cold sourdough crusts in a freezing attic. Now... I’m sitting in cashmere with fifty mob bosses calling me Donna.”

Salvatore let out a rich, raspy chuckle from his armchair.

“A Donna is not made by bloodlines, Nora,” the old Don said, setting his papers aside. “A Donna is made by the heart that protects the house when the wolves are inside the walls.”

Dante reached into his pocket and placed the velvet box on my lap.

“Open it, Nora.”

My hands trembled slightly as I lifted the lid.

Resting inside was not a commercial diamond bought from a Fifth Avenue catalog.

Inside sat Donna Maria Caruso’s original wedding ring—a flawless, five-carat emerald-cut Colombian emerald surrounded by a halo of brilliant pavé diamonds, set in hand-forged antique platinum.

My breath caught in my throat.

“Dante... no,” I whispered, looking up into his soulful gray eyes. “This is your mother’s ring. I cannot take this.”

Dante dropped onto both knees on the Persian rug in front of me, taking my left hand into his massive, warm palms.

“My mother wore this ring for forty years, Nora,” Dante said, his deep baritone carrying an emotional tremor that shook my entire soul. “She told me that when I found the woman who would stand beside me through the fire, a woman whose courage could not be bought and whose heart could not be broken, I was to place this stone on her finger.”

He looked down at the gentle swell of my belly where his hand rested.

“You saved my father’s life. You gave my house its honor back. And I want to give your daughter a father who will move mountains to keep her safe.”

He lifted the emerald ring, holding it poised before my trembling finger.

“Nora Vance, will you marry me? Will you be my wife, Lily’s mother, and the true Donna of the Caruso empire?”

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness spilled over my lashes, hot against my cheeks.

“Yes,” I choked out through my laughter, throwing my arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Dante! A thousand times yes!”

Dante swept me up into his arms, lifting me off the sofa, spinning me beneath the sunlit timber arches before bringing his lips down onto mine in a fierce, breathless, deeply tender kiss that sealed our destiny forever.

He slid the emerald ring onto my finger.

May you like

It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming brilliantly beneath the Adirondack sun.
