Chapter 14 - The Heartbeat on the Monitor

The wedding day arrived in a blaze of brilliant, perfect summer sunshine.

The outdoor amphitheater atop the Adirondack bluffs had been transformed into an ethereal wonderland of white orchids, fragrant wisteria, and thousands of twinkling crystal lanterns.

Over six hundred guests had gathered beneath the vast, open mountain sky:

Nurses, doctors, and therapists from the maternity clinics sitting alongside dockworkers, warehouse handlers, and transit union members from across New York and Canada.

The senior capos of the Five Families, wearing clean bespoke tuxedos, sitting respectfully beside childhood educators, legal advocates, and community organizers.

At the front of the stone aisle, standing proudly on his own two feet without his cane, was Don Salvatore Caruso.

Beside him stood Marco as master of ceremonies, looking sharp and proud in his tailored tuxedo.

At the altar, constructed from hand-hewn mountain granite and white climbing roses, stood Dante Caruso.

He looked breathtakingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo with a single white calla lily pinned to his lapel, his gray eyes fixed on the entrance archway with undisguised, radiant adoration.

The string quartet swelled into a majestic, triumphant bridal march.

The heavy cedar gates swung open.

I walked down the petal-strewn aisle on the arm of my brother Toby, who walked tall, proud, and steady, tears of unbridled joy shining in his eyes.

My gown was a custom masterpiece of French lace and flowing ivory silk that trailed behind me like sea foam across the stone path. Around my neck rested Donna Maria’s teardrop emerald necklace, and on my finger sparkled the five-carat emerald and platinum ring.

In the front row, Mrs. Carter held baby Lily, who was dressed in a miniature ivory lace dress, cooing happily as she watched her mother approach.

When I reached the altar, Dante stepped forward and took my hand.

His touch was warm, solid, and filled with a reverence that took my breath away.

He lifted my veil with fingers that trembled faintly with overwhelming emotion.

“You take my breath away, Nora,” he whispered, his voice rich and deep with love.

“You’re stuck with me forever now, Don Caruso,” I whispered back, my hazel eyes dancing with radiant joy.

“Best contract I ever negotiated,” he replied with that rare, breathtaking smile of his.

The archbishop raised his hands in blessing over us and the congregation watching with tears of pure happiness.

“We are gathered here today to witness the union of two souls whose courage defeated the darkness, and whose truth built a sanctuary of life, honor, and healing for an entire empire.”

We exchanged our sacred vows—words forged not from syndicate treaties, but from the depths of two hearts that had survived the storm and found peace in each other’s arms.

Dante slid a solid platinum band onto my finger beside the emerald ring.

“With this ring, Nora,” Dante vowed, his deep baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the mountain amphitheater, “I give you my life, my protection, my empire, and my heart. For as long as my heart beats, you will be my shelter, my queen, and my light. No shadow will ever touch your life, and no hand will ever harm what belongs to me.”

I placed his platinum band onto his finger, looking straight into his dark, soulful eyes with complete, fearless love.

“With this ring, Dante, I promise to walk beside you in every battle, to heal you when you hurt, and to love you, your father, and our daughter fiercely and completely until our final breath.”

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the archbishop declared with a joyful smile. “You may kiss the bride.”

Dante wrapped his strong arms around my waist, dipping me slightly as his lips met mine in a passionate, breathtaking kiss that brought the entire six hundred guests to their feet in thunderous, joyous applause.
