Chapter 6 - The Council of Five BoroughsA collective, shuddering gasp hissed through the thirty syndicate commanders seated along the table.

Men who controlled the concrete unions of Brooklyn, the maritime docks of Staten Island, and the transit corridors of Manhattan sat with their hands flat on the white linen, sensing the sudden, lethal drop in pressure.
Arthur Sterling slowly set his glass down. It rattled violently against the porcelain saucer.
“Dante, you are letting childhood grief cloud your judgment,” Arthur said, trying to force his voice into its polished, aristocratic cadence. “An old logistics manifest from a subsidiary transport line proves nothing! A scullery maid stole an antique off a dresser years ago—that does not warrant bringing ancient ghosts to our alliance table!”
Dante didn't argue.
He tapped the desk. Marco stepped forward, turning the manifest over to reveal the uncashed ten-million-dollar promissory note, laying it flat before Don Carmine Falcone—the oldest and most revered capo in New York.
Falcone adjusted his wire-rimmed reading glasses, his liver-spotted hands scanning the ink.
His weathered face hardened into stone.
“Arthur,” Falcone rasped, his voice cutting through the room like an ice pick. “Is this your personal signature?”
Arthur swallowed hard, cold sweat beading across his forehead under the chandelier heat.
“Carmine, that was an internal corporate settlement from twenty years ago! It has nothing to do with the Caruso family!”
“It has everything to do with the Caruso family,” Falcone said, looking up with ancient, merciless disgust. “You burned Donna Carmela alive in her bed. And your daughter tried to murder her granddaughter in the cellar of this very house three hours ago.”
Across the table, thirty syndicate commanders stood up in unison, their chairs scraping back, their hands diving beneath their bespoke jackets.
Arthur Sterling backed against his chair, his patrician arrogance evaporating into raw, cornered panic.
“Falcone! Listen to me! The Sterling family controls forty percent of the commercial credit lines across this state! If you move against us, the federal authorities will have search warrants on every terminal in New Jersey by dawn!”
Dante stepped forward, towering over the older man like an executioner on a scaffold.
“The federal authorities are already at your logistics headquarters on 42nd Street, Arthur,” Dante said, each word falling like an iron anvil. “Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Vance—a man whose integrity you could never buy—has been reviewing your offshore naptha purchases since midnight.”
Arthur’s eyes dilated in pure horror.
“Marcus Vance...?”
“He doesn't like bankers who burn women and children to steal shipping lanes,” Dante whispered.
He looked at Marco.
“Bring in Genevieve.”
The side doors opened. Two guards dragged Genevieve Sterling into the room.
Her custom silk gown was stained with cellar mud, her diamond jewelry stripped away, her makeup smeared across her pale face.
When she saw her father surrounded by thirty armed mobsters, a shrill, hysterical shriek tore from her throat.
“Daddy! They know! They found the brooch! They know about the naptha!”
Arthur Sterling collapsed into his chair, his hands covering his face, weeping in broken, hopeless agony.
Dante looked down at the ruined dynasty with absolute, unyielding coldness.
“The Sterling alliance is terminated,” Dante declared, his baritone booming through the vaulted hall. “Every warehouse, every transport permit, and every banking charter bearing your name in this territory is seized under the authority of the Caruso Outfit.”

He looked at Marco.
“Take them to the subterranean holding cells beneath Pier 4. They will sit in the dark until the federal marshals arrive.”
