Chapter 7 - A Scent of Vinegar and CorditeBy 3:30 AM, the dining salon had been cleared of the Sterling family and their bodyguards.

The thirty syndicate capos remained seated along the table, having signed emergency transfer protocols that absorbed eighty million dollars of Sterling commercial assets into the Caruso Family Trust without firing a single shot.
In the master suite upstairs, the soft chime of an antique carriage clock signaled the arrival of the fourth hour.
Clara woke slowly, her eyes fluttering open to find the room bathed in the warm amber glow of the fireplace.
The pain in her lower back had completely subsided into a dull, manageable ache. The intravenous fluids had restored the warmth to her skin, and for the first time in six months, she did not feel the cold bite of the cellar floor against her ribs.
Beside her bed sat Mrs. Higgins, holding a warm bowl of chicken broth and freshly sliced peaches.
“Drink, Donna Lucia,” the old housekeeper whispered gently, helping her sit up against the silk pillows. “Your brother has cleaned the house.”
“Donna Lucia...” Clara repeated, the name feeling strange, beautiful, and vast on her tongue.
The double doors opened softly.
Dante walked into the room. He had removed his tuxedo jacket, wearing a simple black cashmere sweater and dark trousers, his hands in his pockets.
When he saw Clara sitting up, a rare, breathtaking smile softened his sharp jawline.
He walked to the bedside, dropping onto one knee on the rug.
“How does my nephew feel, Lucia?” he asked softly.
Clara smiled through her tears, reaching out to touch his cheek.
“He’s sleeping, Dante. He likes the warmth of this room.”
Dante reached over to the nightstand, picked up the antique platinum crowned eagle brooch, and gently pinned it over her heart, right against the ivory silk of her gown.
The Burmese rubies burned brilliantly under the firelight.
“This belongs to you, little sister,” Dante murmured, his voice rich with deep emotion. “Our grandmother wore this eagle when she held you in her arms. Now it watches over your son.”
Clara looked down at the platinum eagle, her tears dropping onto the metal.
“What happened downstairs, Dante?”
“Arthur Sterling and Genevieve are in federal holding,” Dante replied, his voice firm and steady. “Their empire has been dissolved. The fifty thousand dollars in debt in Queens has been erased, and the men who threatened your child will never see the light of day again.”
He stood up, walking over to the wardrobe, and pulled out an embossed leather portfolio bearing the golden seal of the State of New York.
He laid it gently on her lap.
“What is this, Dante?” Clara asked, looking down at the parchment.
“The official decree from the surrogate’s court, Lucia,” Dante smiled. “Restoring your legal birthright, your name, and transferring fifty percent of the Caruso Maritime Corporation into your name.”
Clara gasped, her hands trembling against the paper.
May you like
“Fifty percent... Dante, that is worth hundreds of millions of dollars!”
“You are the daughter of this bloodline, Lucia,” Dante said, his voice thick with unyielding sincerity. “You do not ask for what is yours; you take your seat at the head of the table.”
