Chapter 10 - Bloodlines and Broken AlliancesOver the next two weeks, the reorganization of Chicago’s maritime and financial corridors proceeded with astonishing speed and ruthless precision.

Every shell company and offshore repository associated with the Vance family was systematically audited, dismantled, and seized by federal marshals.
Arthur Vance was formally indicted on sixteen counts of federal racketeering, securities fraud, and aggravated murder-for-hire. He was denied bail, remanded to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago to await a trial that would guarantee him consecutive life sentences without parole.
Giselle Vance was sentenced to thirty years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, and international racketeering.
Her designer gowns, her luxury penthouse, and her offshore accounts were completely liquidated by court decree, with eighty percent of the proceeds transferred directly into the Thomas Miller Restitution Fund to support the families of maritime workers killed in the line of duty.
Meanwhile, at the Moretti Tower, the cold, imposing atmosphere had undergone a remarkable transformation.
The dark, heavy drapes that had kept the penthouse shrouded in gloom were removed, replaced with airy linen curtains that let the autumn sunlight flood every corridor.
Elena had taken over the central compliance offices on the forty-fourth floor, transforming the formerly corrupt auditing department into an impenetrable fortress of transparency and legal rigor.
One rainy Tuesday evening in November, Dante walked into her corner office wearing a dark charcoal wool coat over an unbuttoned white shirt.
Elena was standing by the panoramic window overlooking the misty river, reviewing shipping manifests on a digital tablet.
She looked up as he entered, a brilliant, genuine smile transforming her face.
“Working late, Chief Auditor?” Dante teased softly, walking across the hardwood floor to meet her.
“Just making sure the Don of the Midwest doesn't slip any unapproved grain shipments past my inspectors,” she replied with an affectionate grin, setting her tablet on the desk.
Dante stopped in front of her, his large, warm hands settling naturally onto her waist, pulling her gently against the solid warmth of his broad chest.
He leaned down, burying his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.
“Vanilla, rain, and clean paper,” he murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to come home to.”
Elena wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her cheek against his shoulder.
“The federal trial concluded this morning, Dante,” she whispered. “Arthur and Giselle were transferred to their permanent facilities.”
“I know,” Dante murmured, his arms tightening around her with fierce, protective devotion. “The chapter is closed. The city is clean.”

He pulled back slightly, his dark gray eyes searching hers with an intensity that took her breath away.
“Come with me to the lake, Elena. There is something I need to show you.”
