Chapter 12 - An Auditor’s Truth ReclaimedThe following month was a whirlwind of joyous celebration, legal renewal, and profound healing.

Under Elena’s direction, the Thomas Miller Memorial Trust established an independent whistleblower protection network across the Midwest, providing legal defense funds, private security details, and financial stipends for corporate employees who exposed corruption in maritime and municipal contracts.

The dockworkers, warehouse handlers, and rail operators who had suffered under Vance Capital’s extortion schemes received full pension restorations, comprehensive healthcare coverage, and guaranteed wage protections under the newly chartered Moretti Maritime Accord.

One sunny Saturday morning in December, Elena walked into the grand kitchen of the Lake Forest estate.

The scent of fresh cinnamon, brewing dark roast coffee, and warm sourdough bread filled the sunny room.

Marco, Dante’s chief enforcer, was sitting at the breakfast island in a clean flannel shirt, drinking coffee and laughing heartily with the senior household staff as they reviewed the security schedules for the upcoming winter gala.

“Good morning, Donna Elena,” Marco teased with a respectful, affectionate wink as she walked in.

“Stop calling me that, Marco,” Elena laughed, swatting his shoulder with a linen towel before picking up a mug of coffee. “I’m an accountant; you outrank me in firepower.”

“Nobody outranks the woman who cleared a jam under fire in an Indiana ditch,” Marco grinned, taking a bite of warm pastry. “You’re the boss now.”

Footsteps sounded softly from the hallway.

Dante walked into the kitchen, wearing a casual charcoal cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, powerful, and breathtakingly handsome.

He walked straight to where Elena was standing, wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her gently against his solid, warm chest.

He buried his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply.

“Vanilla, clean rain, and sweet bread,” he murmured against her skin, sending a delicious shiver down her spine. “The only scent I ever want to wake up to.”

Elena leaned back against him, looping her arms over his, smiling at the reflection of their family gathered in the sunlit kitchen.

“The wedding invitations were mailed this morning, Dante,” she whispered.

“Five hundred guests,” Dante smiled against her cheek. “And this time, Thomas Miller’s family is sitting in the front row, drinking the first toast themselves.”

Marco chuckled from the island, nodding with satisfaction.

“And nobody is checking tickets on the train, boss. Not ever again.”

Laughter rippled through the kitchen, warm, bright, and completely devoid of shadows.
