Chapter 13 - Cleaning House on Michigan AvenueOn the evening before their wedding, Dante and Elena hosted an intimate family dinner in the private salon on the forty-fourth floor of the Moretti Tower.

The table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh white lilies, yellow roses, and fragrant sprigs of rosemary.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the corners.

The people seated around the table were the true, honorable foundation of their new life:

Thomas Miller’s widow, Martha, looking healthy, radiant, and proud in a bespoke navy dress, laughing as she shared memories of Thomas with Don Carmine Falcone.

Elena’s younger brother, who had arrived from Denver on a private flight arranged by Dante, sitting beside Marco, looking sharp and proud in his new tailored suit.

Assistant US Attorney Marcus Vance, sitting as an honored guest alongside senior labor leaders from the docks.

And at the head of the table sat Dante Moretti, looking more relaxed and handsome than he had ever appeared in his life.

At eight o'clock, Dante tapped his wine glass with a silver dessert spoon.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

Dante stood up, his deep, resonant baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room.

“Two months ago,” Dante began, his dark gray eyes shining with an emotion so deep it made Elena’s heart overflow, “this city was governed by men who believed that power was measured by fear, silence, and broken contracts. We were ready to seal an alliance built on murder, greed, and stolen money.”

He looked directly at Elena, his smile radiant and full of love.

“Elena Cross brought the truth back to this table. She reminded us that a man who does not protect the people who speak the truth is a man whose empire is built on sand. She taught me that true power is the courage to stand unbroken when everyone else is running.”

He raised his glass of Barolo high into the air.

“To Thomas Miller. To Martha. And to Elena, who pulled this house into the light.”

Every single person in the room stood to their feet, raising their glasses in a joyous, heartfelt cheer:

“To Elena! To Dante! Viva la famiglia!”

Martha Miller wiped tears of pure joy from her cheeks, while Elena’s brother cheered loudly from the table.

Dante pulled Elena gently to her feet, his arms wrapping around her, his lips meeting hers in a tender, lingering kiss that sealed their family's redemption forever.
