Chapter 14 - THE FINAL TRIAL OF HONOR BEFORE THE FIVE FAMILIESThree days later, the grand banquet hall of the Caruso compound was restored to its full, magnificent glory.

The crystal chandeliers blazed with warm, golden light. The long mahogany table was set with fine linen, polished silver, and crystal decanters. But the atmosphere was completely transformed from the cold, tense evening when Giselle Delacroix had attempted to banish an old chef to the scullery.

Tonight, there were no whispers of treason. There were no hidden appraisers drilling vaults in the dark. The heads of the Five Families sat together in genuine unity, their glasses filled to the brim.

At the center of the dais, Dante stood up, holding a glass of vintage red wine.

Beside him, sitting at his right hand, was my sister, Lily. She was dressed in a lovely blush-pink gown, her crutches resting against the wall behind her, her face glowing with health and happiness as she laughed with Don Bernardo’s granddaughter. Her medical treatments had been fully arranged, the top surgeons in the nation assigned to her recovery, and her future secured for the rest of her life.

Dante raised his glass, and the entire hall fell into respectful silence.

“Brothers,” Dante spoke, his voice carrying with undisputed sovereign authority. “For twenty-four years, this house lived in the shadow of vengeance. We believed that strength was measured by the blood we spilled and the fear we inspired in our enemies.”

He looked down at me, seated beside Lily, wearing a modest, breathtaking ivory dress that Dante had personally commissioned for this evening.

“But three nights ago, a young woman walked into this hall carrying a rusted biscuit tin. She risked her livelihood, her safety, and her life to protect an old man who had nothing left to give except a loaf of rustic bread. She reminded me of what my mother taught me before she was taken: that an empire built on cruelty will collapse from within, but an empire built on honor and truth will stand for generations.”

Dante set his glass down on the table, walked down the three stone steps of the dais, and stopped directly in front of my chair.

The entire hall watched in breathless anticipation.

Dante reached into his pocket and drew out a simple, elegant platinum ring set with a brilliant, flawless sapphire—the color of the Sicilian sea where his mother had been born.

He went down on one knee before me.

Gasps of awe echoed from the capos, followed by immediate, thunderous silence.

“Clara Evans,” Dante said, his voice raw, honest, and filled with a tenderness that brought tears spilling over my eyelashes. “You showed me that the greatest power in this world is the courage to protect the vulnerable. You brought honor back to my table, and you brought light back to my life. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, and the sovereign mistress of the Caruso family?”

I looked at Lily, who was beaming with tears of joy in her eyes. I looked at the memory of Giuseppe smiling from the heavens. And I looked into the eyes of the man who had torn down an entire empire of lies to protect the truth.

“Yes, Dante,” I whispered, my voice trembling with happiness. “Yes.”

Dante slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger, rose to his feet, and pulled me into his arms, kissing me before the entire assembly as the banquet hall erupted into thunderous, standing applause that shook the very foundations of the estate.
