Chapter 10 - Bloodlines and Stolen NamesThe formal transition of the shipping syndicate was ratified during a private dinner in the grand ballroom on Christmas Eve.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the gates. No tension in the air.

The long mahogany table was covered with a simple, elegant white linen cloth, illuminated by soft candlelight and decorated with fresh pine boughs, holly berries, and white calla lilies.

Seated around the table were the people who truly represented the soul of our new life:

My mother, Clara, looking radiant and healthy in an emerald velvet dress, laughing as she shared childhood memories with Walter Brennan.

Walter, sitting tall and proud in his new bespoke suit, wearing his silver eagle watch chain, enjoying a glass of fine Barolo.

Dante and the senior security commanders, sitting comfortably with their families, sharing platters of roasted lamb and handmade tortellini.

And at the head of the table sat Sebastian Romano.

He stood up, tapping his wine glass with a silver fork to draw our attention.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

“Thirty-six years ago,” Sebastian began, his deep baritone carrying clearly to every soul in the vaulted room, “my father Michael sat at this table and told his friends that an empire is not measured by the ships in the harbor, but by the love in the house.”

He looked down at the tiny brown shoes resting in their cardboard box on the sideboard, their silver stars catching the candlelight.

“A father’s love cannot be burned in a warehouse. It cannot be stolen by greedy men. It cannot be buried under thirty-six years of lies.”

He raised his glass high into the air, looking directly at my mother, then at me.

“To Michael Romano. To Elena. And to Grace, who carried the little brown shoes home.”

The entire room stood to their feet, raising their glasses in a thunderous, room-shaking toast that echoed off the vaulted frescoed ceilings:

“To Michael! To Elena! To Donna Grace! Viva la famiglia!”

My mother wiped tears of pure joy from her cheeks, while Walter clapped his hands with a beaming smile.

Sebastian walked around the table, wrapping his strong arms around my mother and me, pulling us tight against his chest in an embrace so fierce, so warm, and so unbreakable that every shadow of the past was extinguished forever.
