Chapter 11 - The Fall of the House of AshfordIn early January, the federal trial of Charles Ashford and his daughter Vivienne concluded with historic, devastating efficiency.

With the unsealed records from Pier 17, the bank transfer receipts from Nassau, and the adoption files from Cooperstown, the jury deliberated for less than three hours before returning guilty verdicts on all counts.

Charles Ashford was sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence in Colorado.

Vivienne Ashford was sentenced to thirty-two years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, for federal conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate extortion.

Their private estates in Greenwich and Martha's Vineyard were completely liquidated by court decree, with eighty percent of the proceeds transferred directly into the newly established Clara Romano Pediatric Rehabilitation Fund.

On the afternoon following the sentencing, Sebastian took me down to the newly restored Greenpoint warehouse on the Brooklyn waterfront.

The old, blackened ruins where Michael Romano had died thirty-six years ago had been completely cleared away.

In their place stood a magnificent, three-story community center and trade academy, constructed from red brick, polished steel, and expansive glass windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline.

Above the main entrance, carved in gleaming white Vermont marble, were the words:

THE MICHAEL ROMANO MEMORIAL ACADEMY — WHERE TRUTH IS RESTORED AND COURAGE LIVES FOREVER.

Sebastian stood beside me on the boardwalk, his hand resting gently on my shoulder.

“What do you think, Grace?” he asked softly, looking up at the marble inscription.

“It’s beautiful, Sebastian,” I whispered, tears of profound peace stinging my eyes. “My grandfather would have loved it.”

“He is here, Grace,” Sebastian smiled, pulling me close against his side as the cold harbor breeze ruffled our coats. “Every time an honest child walks through those doors, he will always be here.”
