Chapter 14 - The Cobbler’s Bench RestoredOn the evening before Easter, our family gathered in the private dining room of the estate for a quiet, intimate celebration.

There were no bodyguards checking identification at the door. No armed sentries watching from the terrace.

The people gathered around the table were the true, honorable foundation of our new life:

My mother, Clara, walking tall and steady in her burgundy leather shoes, sitting beside Walter Brennan.

Walter, laughing heartily as he shared stories of his apprentice days with Dante and the senior security commanders.

And Sebastian, sitting beside me, his arm resting comfortably around my shoulders, looking more relaxed and handsome than I had ever seen him.

At eight o'clock, Sebastian tapped his wine glass with his silver dessert spoon.

The room fell into an eager, affectionate hush.

Sebastian reached into his breast pocket and produced the little brown leather shoes that his father had made thirty-six years ago.

They had been cleaned, polished, and mounted in a custom shadowbox crafted from reclaimed oak from Pier 17, with a brass plaque reading:

THE SHOES THAT LED US HOME — MICHAEL ROMANO, 1988.

He turned his dark, soulful eyes toward Walter.

“Walter,” Sebastian said, his voice rich and deep with paternal love.

“Yes, Sebastian?”

“My father asked you to keep these shoes until I was old enough to understand,” Sebastian murmured, his voice thick with deep emotion. “I understand now. I understand that an empire without justice is just an open grave. And I understand that an honest craftsman is worth more than a thousand corrupt politicians.”

He handed the shadowbox to Walter, who held it against his chest with tears streaming down his face.

“Thank you, son,” Walter whispered. “Michael’s soul is finally at peace.”

Sebastian turned to me, his gray eyes shining with an emotion so vast, so profound, that words were entirely unnecessary.

He raised his glass of Barolo high into the air.

“To our family,” Sebastian declared, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal devotion. “Forever whole. Forever protected.”

“To our family!” we cheered together, clinking our glasses beneath the warm candlelight.
